There's an unknown device under other devices in device manager.I can't play the shuffle as haven't been able to add any songs to it.Darren0

Easiest way to test it is to unplug the shuffle while you're looking at the device driver window. If the unknown
device disappears, then that's your beastie!
Incidentally, I just plugged my iPod into my Vista machine and it put the driver under Portable Devices. You should
look there as well as under mass storage as Ice suggested.
If it turns out the unknown device is what you want, right-click it and select update driver. Click Browse my computer for driver software, click "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", then you may need to uncheck the "show compatible hardware" option, and select an appropriate driver.
Mine (Not a shuffle) is using Microsoft WPD Filesystem Volume DriverThe pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

So where the c and d drive etc are?
When i plug my dongle in that shows up as M but nothing at all happens on any USB port when i plug the shuffle in.
I might aswell sell the damn thing on Ebay.Darren0 -
that's right...it would seem to me that the ipod thing is a dud...did you check the batteries as that will cause it not to show up...it needs to be working for vista or any pc to pick it up...but vista should just pick it up straight away...:DSo where the c and d drive etc are?

Right, so we know the USB port's OK as your dongle work in it.
Is the battery removable on a shuffle?
My next move would be:
Replace the USB cable. Borrow one if you can just to test it and see if that's the problem.
Contact the company that supplied the shuffle and get them to replace it. You shouldn't have this much hassle to get it working - especially in Vista. There aren't actually any drivers you can download for this as Vista has ipod drivers bundled in so it should just work.
We've checked everything that's worth checking, I'd say it's time to get on to the supplier now and get it replaced. The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.
