Vinegar as a fabric softener?

my fabric softener has nearly run out and I have been considering using vinegar instead. Looking at asda online for costing and their vinegar it 44p for 568ml which would do about 16 loads (based on 2 tbs per load) where as their SP softener is 66p and would do 42 loads. Am I right that it would be cheaper to use SP softener or am I missing something?0

Google Chinese Supermarket in your local area.
I bought 5 litres of white vinegar from one last week for £2.25 as well as 3kg of bicarbonate of soda for £3.60.0 -

Vinegar is vinegar, what has washing softener got in that?
But then again, softener does make your clothes smell nice.
I was told by the inventor of those dirt trap mats years ago that you shouldn't use softener when washing towels as they aren't as absorbent.0 -
I use white vinegar as fabric softener, and have done for a little while now. If you want a nice smell add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil to the vinegar in a 200ml (approx) plastic bottle and give it a good shake before each use.
I agree with other posters, find your local chinese supermarket, or failing that befriend someone with a card to your local cash and carry!
An added advantage is that it will help clean the detergent gunk and limescale out of the machine as you go:)December G/C 172.85/250

I don't think for some on OS it's all about the pennies, I assume vinegar is less harmful to environment than standard softner and all it's chemicals. Plus it has shed loads of different uses as opposed to softner which has just oneI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

I have been thinking about using vinegar as a fabric conditioner for a while, ever since I read about it on another website, I have been holding back slightly because I also wondered about the smell. Now that I have read many posts on here saying it does not leave a vinegary smell I am off to try it now and see how I get on.
I was interested to read about other people using soda crystals instead of or alongside washing powder, is this a better option than the soap nuts that you can buy as I was thinking of using them instead of washing powder. :j0 -
can I jump onto this thread and ask, does vinegar help with static in clothes,
I cant stand it when clothes "cling"Treat other's how you like to be treated.
