Vinegar as a fabric softener?
Comments
-
How much vinegar do you use for this and how does it work?0

I use a splash - maybe about 2 to 3 tablespoons? - plain cheap brown vinegar for 17p 500ml - put it into fabric softener part of WM. Don't know how it works but i think it's because it takes the extra soap out. Marvellous stuff!!

Vinegar must be the most under-rated product available - the uses seem endless - we use it as a 'cleaner', 'de-scaler' and now as a fabric conditioner.
I remember that my mum always used to rub vinegar into our heads, when she washed our hair - can't, for the life of me, remember why.
Funnily enough I HATE vinegar on chips.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

For preference I would use white distilled vinegar, there's always a chance the malt vinegar might stain clothing. It doesn't smell as strong either.
It's an excellent fabric softener and you don't get a gunky soap drawer anymore!:wave:0 -
Hi maypole,
I use white vinegar and the same amount of vinegar as I would have of fabric softener.
There's an older thread that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.

Thank you all, off to try this. I think I will go for the white vinegar as that is what I use for other cleaning.0

I like the idea of using vinegar instead of fabric softner, however, I still like the smell that fabric softner gives.
I was thinking off mixing vinegar and fabric half and half. Has anyone else tried this?
Thanks,

I think that might defeat the purpose of using vinegar - ie you'd still get the conditioner residue on your clothes. Have you tried adding a couple of drops of essential oil?
I'll add this to a longer vinegar thread to keep all the answers together.
Edit: I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do any harm to try it - though if the conditioner seems to 'curdle' when you add the vinegar I'd probably give it a miss!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
I mix a litre of white vinegar with about 250ml of conditioner and shake it up before pouring, it doesn't 'curdle' and it just gives the wash a light pleasant smell and retains the vinegars property for really helping to soften clothes and towels, best of both worlds!!!.:j0

I used vinegar today for the first time much to DD's horror. I used it on towels and bedding and think the smell is great. I made DD smell it as she was worried about smelly like a chippy!0
