  • I use vinegar too. Your dispenser drawer should have a designated area for the softener. I pour the vinegar in there up to the max line if needs be and there is no smell.

i use viniger for most of my fabric softening needs - brill on towels and makes them soak up more water than fabric softener!! the only thing i use conventional softener on is a wool wash - too scared to put cashmeer in with vinegar!!

I use vinegar as a softener for everything... including cashmere, and it's fine. I use ecover powder & soda crystals, or ecover liquid to wash with.

Before Christmas I was without a WM for a couple of weeks while my utility room was being done up, so I took my laundry to my brother's flat. The chemical smell from the detergent & softener he used was overpowering, and it took two washes to get it out.

Using vinegar means your clothes don't smell of anything... and I don't want to smell of fabric conditioner. If I want to smell of something other than me, I'll use perfume thanks!

Or you could buy her that "Diamonds" perfume by Emporio Armani and claim you misunderstood if she kicks up a stink? ;)

  • I have read this thread yesterday. I have just popped some vinegar in with my first load today. My youngest has eczema so I am interested to see how vinegar works on my wash.

  • Wow! I have had eczema my whole life, I wonder if switching to vinegar in the washing will help? Gonna try this - as soon as I get a new washing machine (well, a freecycle washing machine)

In the summer, a potty full of wee was knocked over in the kids room - I searched the net and found people talking about putting vinegar on cats wee, so I tried it on the carpet - took some time to dry, but after 2 treatments with watered down white and brown vinegar, the wee smell was completely gone. There was a lingering whiff of vinegar for about 2 days, then that went away too.

Ive had no luck with vinegar to descale my toilet though.

I've used vinegar for clothes, bedding, towels etc for a while now since I found it on this site - Never had a vinegar smell.

Sometimes I add a few drops of essential oils but not always.

Recently Mr Frugal bought 'proper' softener and a week later I was up the GPs with DD2 with exzema arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Back to vinegar - no probs.

Also, no gunk in drawer plus the WM drum is always shiny - ie no limescale in machine so element must be limescale free too :D Happy machine less prone to breakdowns and no expensive Calgon either!
