  • I've just moved into a two bed flat with my g/f and the electric (no gas in the build) was on a pay n go meter w/ british gas - first thing we've done is switch to a credit meter so we can start shopping around and switch to a better priced tariff.

Firstly: from what I know british gas are a no no if you're electric only, so we're getting rid!

Secondly: its occured to me, whilst shopping around, that we don't yet know our monthly bill as our new credit meter was zeroed today. So i'm keeping a 24 hour diary of energy consumption and appliances used/duration etc to find an average consumption per day. I've turned appliances/heating on (we have eco 7 heaters) so I can fairly accuratley judge our energy consumption for a winters day - sounds anal I know but the only way to know our true consumption is to read the meter, even then we can't trust 100% Obviously i'm going to read the meter tommorrow and break the cost down.:T

Why rely on a bill to tell you how much energy you've used, afterall it wouldn't be unheard of to be overcharged by a power company. I'm going to work out and know our energy costs down to the last pence:money:they ain't getting us this winter.

We are a family of 8 in a three story 4 bedroom house, dishwasher, washing machine etc tumble dryer on when weather is bad - £123 a month for elec and gas combined with eon save online (9 I think), this price expires on halloween so i'm sure it'll rise to scarier amounts soon!
  • Okay, so here is my situation.

My husband and I live in a one year old new build bungalow. Two bedrooms, radiator in the second bedroom is left off. Electricity only. Currently using Scottish Power. The heating system is suppose to be state of the art efficient and all that jazz. I'm starting to wonder though.

We have jobs that keep us out of the house for nearly twelve hours per day. The heating is set to come on for when we get home at 7pm and heats the house until bed time. (Usually 11pm or so.)

We use the oven once a day for our meal at night, we watch some tv/play video games and have made sure that we bought all A rated appliances. We do a couple of washes a week (Ie, coloured and whites) and the rest of the time everything is off.

I received a bill today (after I gave them my actual meter reading) that we owe £907.32 on top of the £600 we've paid throughout the year by monthly direct debit and the over payment from our last flat of £500.

SURELY this cannot be right. Unfortunately, this is our first times leaving home and we are unsure what a "normal" electricity bill is like.

We are getting very flustered as we don't have the money to pay for it and last year (at the old flat) we received a £1600 bill from E.on which we are still paying off. (Even though at that flat we were out 14 hours a day at work and the heating was oil so we effectively had nothing running off the electricity during the day. And only had the tv and lights running for about 4 hours a day after 8pm.

So, could you reply with what your "normal" monthly payment is, what you usually keep your heating temperature at and how I should go about disputing this if it is clearly wrong.

    Please help =(

  • Hello,

    can someone help pls?

I checked my meter reading for electric (one bedroom with gas heating, water tank and electric for everything else) and it has jumped 100 kwh in the past 2.5 weeks!!!! For the two months prior I used about 325 units (at first i was using electric for heating the water in the water tank but then I realised my electric meter was running crazy so I used gas instead.)

I haven't changed my habits apart from switching the lights on the morning and evening when I come home since it's getting darker now but it's all energy saving bulbs! I'm really at a lost how I racked up 100 kwh in 2.5 weeks! I thought I was doing well and .... I'm really dreading the next bill! What could it be?

I'll be grateful for any advice/suggestions! Please help!!! Thanks!!!
  • Three bedroom house no central heating was paying British gas £9/month for gas £43/month electric renewed every October, just been renewed expecting a higher DD so gone up to £16/month for gas and down to £33/month for electric with a £109 rebate. House double glazed, solid wall so no cavity and one gas fire in lounge and gas cooker, all heating by electric oil filed and convection heaters. Two people in the house late fifties, both raised in an era when you would wake up with frost on the inside of the windows and a paraffin heater to keep you warm.
  • For me, it's usually around £10pm of electricity that I use, despite the fact that I live on my own, and tend to use enough electricity for a small family of say 2 adults and a kid. I tend to use my PC a lot, games consoles, films etc. Then again, I am with Ebico.

I am living in a 3 bedroom terrace house.
Me, my wife and 5 years old son.
The other day, I got a letter from Npower.

I am paying by DD. Gas & Electric / Dual plan.. £60 per month.
they had a review then I have to pay £149 per month from last month.
I was with British gas till 2010 then changed to Npower.
I dont think i was paying that much money even though energy price went up recently.
I think i am paying too much money to them.
I checked the what i spent... obviously I dont know exactly how to read the bill.
they calculated predicting cost - based on previous consumption.

while i am reading it, I found something couldnt understand as follows.

this is my predicted electricity cost
    ................. unit ...... p/ kwh ...... amount
    24 Hour 1st .... 84 .... 16.140 .... £13.56
    24 Hour Next .... 508 .... 12.770 .... £64.87
    24 Hour 1st .... 642 .... 17.330 .... £111.26
    24 Hour Next .... 3,907 .... 13.710 .... £535.65
    Annual discount / Alternative reward ........... -£45.00
    Total electricity charges ........... £680.34
    VAT at 5.00% ........... £34.01
Total predicted electricity charges .......... £714.35

anybody know between 24hour 1st and next means???:(

    Many thanks in advance
