It is irresponsible to have a Tom cat and not have it neutered. Yes Karl is Liable for the cost of Kittens caused by his negligence!!

Un neutered Tom cats spray and will making very unpleasant smells especially at the boundary of his territory.

Tom should be neutered immediately. It is non invasive surgary which only which is very brief.

Susan has been irresponsible too. If she can't afford kittens she should have had her cat spayed unless there were strong medical reasons not to have the operation. This is invasive surgery but is quite routine these days.

If Susan can't afford to keep the kittens then she can't have them. They must stay with thier mother for the first few weeks of life, Karl could be expected to assist at that stage.

Karls moral obligation to the kittens stops as soon as suitable homes have been found. Perhaps he could help with finding the new homes.

I hope they both learn from the experiance and become more responsible.

  • Karl should be asking for half of the kittens to sell if they really are Tom's! If she wants to keep the cats, she should pay for their up keep.

  • If Susan is FIT and FREE then maybe Karl should consider it. Otherwise NO!
  • Both should have done the responsible thing when they both got their cats and taken them for the 'snip'. Consiquently they are both at fault and should equally pay! Simple.
  • They are both responsible and should have had their cats neutered - and quite frankly, they should be neutered too. wWth bird brains like this owning animals we don't want the risk of them producing more morons themselves, let alone the poor animals !!

I work in an animal shelter and we deal with vast numbers of cats and kittens with irresponsible owners like Karl and Susan. There are not enough GOOD (I stress the GOOD) homes for the amount of unwanted cats out there.
If people have difficulty affording the cost of having their cat neutered, the Cats Protection League do a voucher scheme (on proof of benefit status). Many vets accept these and it reduces the cost, or check with your local animal shelter to see if it can be arranged through them.
Sometimes we despair. People just do not take on board what is involved when they acquire an animal.
Susan should not keep all the kittens. Cats in multi-cat households are often very stressed and end up badly socialised with an increased risk of disease, plus the accompanying cost of feeding, veterinary care, annual injections against cat flu and so on, routine flea and worm treatments etc. (How much is this likely to concern Susan, though)? Then they will all grow up and have kittens themselves. Female cats can become sexually mature at 5 months old. One unneutered female cat can ultimately be responsible for over 500 kittens when all her descendants start breeding.
  • If she can't afford to keep kittens why didn't she have her cat spayed?

Paternity is always a problem with any litter as when a cat is in season (and it is very obvious so why didn't she keep her indoors) she will mate with any number of tom cats.

Actually nowadays in my area unspayed female cats have quite a problem finding an unneutered tom! Hence I know how obvious a cat in season is. Not to mention noisy.

But Karl should have had his tom "done" Neutered toms often live longer as they tend not to be forever coming home with bites and other injuries.

They are both irresponsible and both should have had their cats neutered:/spayed. Neither of them should even consider keeping any of the kittens as if they can't look after one cat properly what hope for the others.

Here in France cats are looked on as disposable - they can look after themselves after all and there will always be replacements. The result is many feral cats. A British friend of mine has caught and sterilised all the feral cats and kittens in her little village, there were over 20 adults and this was in a hamlet of around 20 houses.

  • No way! Both cats should have been neutered in the first place to avoid situations like this!

  • Both Karl and Susan should have got their cats neutered then there wouldn't be a litter of kittens to worry about.
The kittens should be found homes with responsible owners and then Karl and Susan should act responsibly and neuter their cats. It's not just kittens they need to worry about, there are diseases that can be passed around and end up costing them more money or worse, their cat's lives.
Why do some people still think it's the "female's" responsibility alone to take precautions!!!!
