  • This is dull. Job seekers allowance. The clue is in the title.
If you are not seeking work, you are not entitled. Going on holiday for a week, doubtful there is going to be much jobseeking going on.

It maybe fraud, but i was told that on the QT by an advisor at my local JC last year when i was looking to go away.
..which would also make it a disciplinary offence, probably gross misconduct and would result in them possibly losing their job.

It wouldnt be very successful fraud though

In addition if they hadnt received within 5 working days from when you were due to sign then your claim would be closed anyway but instead of it being closed from the day you went on holiday it would be closed from the last time you signed so depending on dates etc there is a potential of losing upto 2 weeks benefit.

This is not correct. If you do not contact the jc within 5 working days to tell them why you have missed an appointment, they will close your claim. You will have complied by telling them on the day if you are sick. You have 14 days from the first day of sickness to return the JSA28.

This is also incorrect. There are circumstances when jobseekers may be TREATED as available or actively seeking work, eg short periods of sickness, or for up to 2 benefit weeks if they are on holiday IN GB, (but not if they are abroad on holiday as already stated)

Can't argue that, but then they do tend to understand what real life is like. I mean you can get home from spain in 2 hrs by plane. Would probably take a good 5-6 hours to drive back from scotland or the lake district. Chances are that you would not be required to come for interview the same day, there is normally at least a week after the application end date so in theory (seats on planes allowing), you could get back from anywhere in time anyway so i do not see what all the fuss is about.

Right, Im thinking of going on holiday on the day of my sign in (Wednesday), until the following Monday. Am I correct in saying that I should ring up on the Wednesday to sign off, and make a rapid reclaim on the Monday I return? If I did this, how much benefit would I lose ie. is it pro-rated daily, so that I would only lose 5 days money? Also, what would happen if I simply missed my appointment - would someone call me, or would it be up to me to call them to make a rapid reclaim? Thanks

you sign off and fill out a form you should go into the centre. They will give you a freephone number to ring when you return. You are given a rapid reclaim appt and you go from there.

You have no right to a holiday whilst on JSA.
