RSPCA Rehoming: What Happens?

We sadly lost our baby to an illness a week ago and ever since then we've been lost, wandering around talking to him as though he were there/offering to take him out etc.

Whilst most of us feels it is too early, we made an enquiry at the RSPCA (And the Blue Cross who didn't have any Yorkie's which is what we're after) and the lady's going to ring round for us and get back which has made us feel excited, sad and confused all at the same time!

Can anyone please tell us what happens if we're lucky enough to find a Yorkie? Do they come see you at home/do you go to them...? How much does it cost...?

Anything at all that you could tell us would be very helpful - thakn you!

i think they do a home check to make sure everythings ok-they charge niminal fees for any medica treatment and to help them stay running-yorkies might not come up that often but try the contact here they might be able to help

We adopted a puppy from the RSPCA in Norwich in early December.
They do a home check, look at your garden for security and ask questions about how long you will be out during the day, that kind of stuff.
We will have a follow up visit sometime soon to see how pup is getting on.
She was vaccinated and microchipped and had a months free insurance with Petplan plus we will get a voucher worth (I think) £115 to go toward spaying her. Older dogs are already spayed.
The cost for a dog is £100.

Dennis is correct. All reputable rescues will interview you and homecheck you. They will have guidelines in place which set out their criteria for rehoming, but they may differ from rescue to rescue. They may also have further criteria laid out for individual dogs, based on their previous training and treatment, their breed/type and or their individual temperament (eg. their behaviour around children/other dogs/cats/small furries etc). They will worm them, and treat them for fleas. Most will also microchip and neuter the dog if it is old enough, and if not, they will promote neutering and may well give you a discount voucher to do so.

Yorkies do indeed come up in rescue, as do most other breeds! Have a look on DogPages for other rescues near you, and also check out the forums for dogs needing homes. I would advise you avoid Mill Rescue who are near to you - there are reports that, amongst other things, their dogs are not kept in very good conditions; do not routinely see a vet, even if they are ill; and that they rehome sick dogs. Or you can contact the Oldies club if you might be interested in something older than a little puppy? Sadly the owner of the pages mentioned by Georgina isn't very democratic and last I heard had banned people from posting links to the Oldies on his board because he didn't like some of the people who were involved in the Oldies club... *sigh*
Returning to the original question then yes any reputable rescue will do a home check - fee's can vary a LOT from rescue to rescue, but I think the RSPCA are about the £90 mark (or was 2 years ago at least...) Some rescues do a follow up visit, others don't. We've never had a follow up visit but then I take our dog back to say hello from time to time so they know she's doing well and they will (hopefully) get to see her at Crufts this year - demonstrating the kennel club good citizen bronze scheme (we've passed gold but have been asked to help demo bronze with our club).
Don't forget that it's important to grieve the loss of your beloved little pet before getting a new one... Best of luck!

Oh yes, I forgot the Oldies Club and also have a look at The Refuge too. I'm not sure of the politics Tine, but there does seem to be some animosity between some of the boards/organisations, which is a shame as you'd think everyone would put all their energy into promoting rescue dogs, rather than all this infighting.

We couldn't have an older dog - purely for the fact of what might happen soon after I know it could happen any time to any dog or anyone, but what happened to Ty has destroyed us and we're still picking up the pieces even now - it doesn't take much to set one of us off, particularly my mum who nursed him like a baby at times when he clawed at her enough.

Yep - the main reason I pulled the plug on my board a few years ago was the constant backstabbing and pure wickedness of certain people trying to close down other boards... after several years I just had enough. Now I only get involved VERY behind the scenes - don't have the heart for it any more
You just end up very upset when people will rather bicker and snipe than help the animals... hohum
