removal of fridgefreezer for disabled

does anyone know of any firms which dispose of old fridge freezers for them on dla - the council is charging £15 to remove and believe me when i say i am totally skint - i am using all money on renovating my garden so my disabled hubby can use it in the winter - making paths round it and that - i could do without this charge.....maybe i should just dump it? then again - how would i carry it?

  • They have got right funny about taking away fridges and freezers!
Your best bet may be asking a friend to take it down the local tip.
Scrap lads don’t take fridges and they are hard to get rid of.
Ask a friend or family to help you, or ring the environmental health and see if they can help.
If you get caught dumping rubbish it’s a £5000 fine or prison or both! Don’t risk it because they will report you.

I got my old one removed by a environmental company that I found via my council's site even though the council charge. They collected it free.

Have you had a look at your council's site?

i dont know anyone who could take it to the tip for me - thanks anyway - i will search on here to see if anyone would take it away but it does look like ill have to pay the £15 fee - a local man was going to take it and recondition it because it was only 3 years old and worked perfectly - it was just too small for me with two teens and their mates so when i got offered a brand new one double the size of my original for only £100 i took it - i saved a lot of money there so i suppose paying £15 shouldnt bother me.....

    thanks

i think they refuse to take fridges/freezers now because there are now some EU restrictions or targets on the materials that are in fridges (coolants?). I think councils get penalised if they have too much of this type of rubbish.
Our council took our fridge away for free. I was told that they had to do that because of the new regulations! Wonder which is actually true?

no - absolutely not - there is a charge of £15.....aarrrghghghg - can anyone confirm anything about the new regulations then?
  • have you thought about putting it on your local freecyle site if its working ok??
i also didnt want to pay for disposal of mine and put it on freecycle where it is now being picked up by someone who is needing one.
pm if you want the details/link for freecycle etc......need to dig out link but have screaming 3 month old on knee and 2.5 year old playing havoc at the mo!!

If it is working and the Freecycle idea isn't viable for you, you could try the Local Authority's Social Work or Housing Departments. MY LA's Housing Dept Home Support Unit appeals for white goods for clients setting up their first homes. Failing all that what about a "free to good home, must be uplifted" ad in a local freepaper or a card in the newsagent's window?

It just seems such a shame that you have to pay for the privilege of it being carted off to be scrapped when somebody somewhere would surely be very grateful for it :T

Never mind a 'free to good home', does your local paper not have small ads where you can place an ad free for goods up to £75 or thereabouts? You can say buyer collects and get some £££ for it. You said it was working, if it's been under cover since you stopped using it then that's got to be worth a try!
