if you want to get very silly, you can say that playing music on your phone to other people is illegal as it's making an illegal copy in their head

    No you technically need license.

Performing Rights Society has been chasing businesses up lately to get them to pay for a licence. Any business who has the radio on playing music, is breaking the law if they have no licence.

    Quotes in context only please.

because that's classed as making a back up copy of something you already own and have paid for.

downloading from limewire (or anywhere where you don't pay when you are suppose to) is illegal because you haven't paid for the media you are downloading. it's akin to walking into HMV, picking up a CD and walking out, except you are sat in your living room.
If a friend lends you a CD, you record it, then give it back, How on earth do you "own the copyright"?

You don't, if you just borrowed the cd, so lending a cd to a friend to copy is illegal as they haven't 'bought' the copyright, but you can make a copy of the cd that YOU bought as a 'backup', there was a lot of discussion about whether making a copy to keep in your car was piracy and i THINK it was decided that it wasn't as you were just making a backup copy of something that you already own the copyright to.

That would actually be a 'public performance without a license' which would be a different law you're breaking :-)

well either way you look at it, you're breaking the law.

i think in regards to the limewire issue, it's probably best summarised as this:

if you haven't paid for it and don't have permission to download it for free, it's illegal.
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y

90% of the stuff on limewire is illegal to DL and use.
the other 10% consist of trojans virus,s etc... with a bit of legal stuff.

  • Downloading music from file sharing sites is illegal, kids. Don't do it.
