Sorry Mookie but you are wrong. When you download a song, YOU are making a COPY. Unless you have permission from the copyright owner this IS illegal. Not only that, but the nature of the Limewire software means that the files that you have downloaded are now available to other limewire users to download them from you. ie. you are also now an UPLOADER.

I am not trying to tell you that you shouldn't do it, but I just want you to be aware of the potential risk. The risk is minimal - you are more likely to get nabbed for not having a TV license, but the risk is there all the same.

Thanks for the info, I dont use it anyway. Tried it in the past quality of music is rubbish. I use ITunes and Nokia for my music and have done for ages :D

I was always led to believe that Limewire runs on you borrowing their music whilst kept in the Limewire library. I know when I first installed it the music did transfer into Itunes automatically but later it stopped doing this, for the hassle of transferring the files and then getting poor quality music you may as well use I tunes and pay for it, its more hassle than I could be bothered with. ;)

"Most of this thread is misleading and frankly B$!. The only correct information is this given by ThriftyManc (and is deserving of thanks)..."

Thats BS in itself. You Cannot Copyright a thought in your head. Thats just daft. It has to be down on some physical form. Otherwise Granddad could sue Michael Jackson for the entire Beatles back catalogue cause it was in his head before Lennon and McCartney Wrote it down.

Limewire isn't illegal per se, its only when you download load stuff without permission or payment to the particular artist. Limewire contains loads of stuff which is public domain and not covered by copyright. As it also has loads of knocked off illegal stuff.
    Quotes in context only please.

I know it sounds daft but its true. Copyright is a subset of something called 'Intellectual Property' - it is the concept not the physical product that is copyrighted - the songwriter has copyright over the song not the CD. This is why Copyright law is so tricky (and open to abuse). The problem here would be for ThriftyManc to prove that he thought up the song first. Of couse, if you haven't shared the song it would be difficult to argue that someone had copied it!

MJ bought the copyright for all these songs from the original owners, so he now owns the copyright on all these songs. Copyright can be transferred from the original thinker.

Very true, the tool itself is not illegal. But most likely, what you download with it probably is!

Which is BS talk for you can't copyright a thought in your head.

The original question was can you legally download a song on Limewire.

The answer is, yes if you have permission. No if you haven't.

Limewire can be used to share stuff between 'users' if it their own stuff they are sharing perfectly legally. For example, if I wanted to let my mate, download some digital photos of my holiday. Limewire can be used for this, if you have each users ip address, you can directly share info.
