Its a question & discussion
http://www.limewire.com/
(although if it gets any more involved in here it may be better off in techie) 0 -
because that's classed as making a back up copy of something you already own and have paid for.why is it any more illeagal than, say copying an LP to a tape,(or CD Burning) or recording a TV prog to Video tape (or DVD) and watching it more than once?
downloading from limewire (or anywhere where you don't pay when you are suppose to) is illegal because you haven't paid for the media you are downloading. it's akin to walking into HMV, picking up a CD and walking out, except you are sat in your living room.helpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y

their - 'owned by them'

it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0 -
if you own the copyright to a song, you can share it on limewire, if you have the copyright holder's express permission, then you can download it from limewire, but that's never going to happen in the way of major recording artists.I know it sounds daft but its true. Copyright is a subset of something called 'Intellectual Property' - it is the concept not the physical product that is copyrighted - the songwriter has copyright over the song not the CD. This is why Copyright law is so tricky (and open to abuse). The problem here would be for ThriftyManc to prove that he thought up the song first. Of couse, if you haven't shared the song it would be difficult to argue that someone had copied it!
Which is BS talk for you can't copyright a thought in your head.
The original question was can you legally download a song on Limewire.
The answer is, yes if you have permission. No if you haven't.
Limewire can be used to share stuff between 'users' if it their own stuff they are sharing perfectly legally. For example, if I wanted to let my mate, download some digital photos of my holiday. Limewire can be used for this, if you have each users ip address, you can directly share info.helpful tips

What's all this rubbish about limewire being legal because you can't make a CD copy of it.
Downloading songs from limewire is completely and utterly illegal. There is no comeback, there is no fancy techie way around it.
Music sharing is not legal in any way shape or form. Giving the disc to your mate to copy is also technically illegal if we are being picky."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
Sorry to complicate things more, but if music sharing is illegal, is downloading youtube vids illegal? watching the music on there isn't is it?0
-
yea, that's what i meant Riq.
hell, if you want to be MEGA picky, a.k.a, the Record Industry of America (RIAA), putting music onto your ipod is illegal, the RIAA SUED a man for putting music he LEGALLY went out and bought on CD onto his computer.helpful tips

no, you can legally watch the videos on there because youtube have the express authority from the copyright holders when labels put the videos up. as far as actually downloading the videos using a program, i think that may be classed as making illegal copies of music and would be labelled as illegalhelpful tips

if you want to get very silly, you can say that playing music on your phone to other people is illegal as it's making an illegal copy in their headhelpful tips

I wasnt being picky, i was pointing out that this was in the wrong place- this is to help the mods who work on the forum for free and when people post in the wrong place it makes their Jobs harder.
You would realise this if you had read the forum rules- but hey you think im being picky0
