I agree with PaP. Being debt free is weirdly hard. I guess it's like an alcoholic being tempted daily by that one sip of their favourite drink - they have to say 'no' each time otherwise it could lead to a well trodden slippery path.

Isn't it a bit like a slimming diet? if you try & deny yourself something, you end up gorging on it?
Maybe if like already said, you had a budget for fripperies you might not go so wild.

£50 on candles:eek: Poundland etc do some really nice ones.

Yankee Candles, well I'm surrounded by them where I work.
I work in a large old mill converted into a designer outlet and it sells allsorts.
But until I worked there which I only started last November, then I hadn't bothered much about candles.

Now with everyone who comes through the checkout almost having a yankee candle or Colony Candle included in their purchase, I was tempted.
I managed to buy 12 tarts for £3 which is a bargain as they are normally 66p each, and two candles in jars for £5.19 each.

I'm now obessed with buying them, but will be strong as I have told the customer service not to serve me anymore until middle of July as I have enough to last me ages.

They are the cheapest around where I work as the customers tell me, so £50 would get you more than 3.
Anyway don't want to tempt you ;)

I'm as bad with credit cards. I transfer balances at 0%, then promise myself I won't use the old one, but then what do I do, but use that as well and end up with more than what I started with.

thanks everyone for the comments ..i'm really lucky that our debt never got the the point of phone calls etc...as soon as i understood that hubby was taking ahuge cut in pay i had to deal with the debt ...but i am positive i aint going back down that road ..i love not having to do overtime to survive i only have to do overtime if i want a holiday (and now pay off candles i mean i have to do 10 hours night shift to pay for these ones) or something and it feels so good to be in that position ...i dont want to cut the card up (although i probably should) as i use it in asda ..as soon as i have used it i transfer the money over this way i get the cash back (nearing £100 for this year) and non of the interest..and i also want to have it for emergencies ...maybe i need to have a treats budget though and stick to it ...and if i spend it on candles then thats it i cant use it for anything else ...hmmm i'm thinking that might work...thanks tara for saying you read my diary i wasnt really sure many people did (it got a bit depressing towards the end )

    :)

I hav the same problem, in that I am scared when I do become DF I'll do the same...
I think that the idea about a treats budget is good and will let you 'splurge' without goin mad! You could also add all the extra cash you get (try doing a challenge, or bingo etc) and really enjoy spending it on anything you fancy.

We are bombarbed every day from waking to sleeping to buy buy buy and apart from this site, which in turn has the grabbit boards! :D, so it is really hard.
