My sister in law organised a canal boat cruise for her 40th which was last Sunday. It was a lovely afternoon. She used Grebe Canal Cruises in Tring. http://www.grebecanalcruises.co.uk/
  • How about a Red Letter Day for them to choose for themselves. There are many dare devil things and also some nice family things, so something for everyone.
  • I was taken to Pisa for the day as a surprise on my 40th, in these days of budget airlines it's surprising what distances are practical.

How about a trip in a helicopter - Near Leeds airport there is a club offering a trip for £30.

If you are near Hull or Newcastle how about a cheap ferry cruise for 2 days?

it depends what he likes... is he an adventure lover? my OH's brother turned 40 recently and everyone chipped in for scuba diving lessons on his next holiday.
another friend got a tree to put in his garden, so that he could 'watch it grow as he grew', and loved it.
picnics are always a great idea- picnic hamper (few on sale at the mo), blanket, little radio and a bit of sunshine.
that's all i can think of right now, but my brain hasn't woken up yet

If there are any airports near you - how about a short trip in a helicopter or in a glider?
