Saw an ad on telly the other afternoon for Sheilas' Wheels (a sister company of Esure). I'd got a quote from Privilege which was about £90 cheaper than my last year's company (First Alternative, a sister company of Esure agan) but Sheilas' Wheels came out at £150 cheaper than First Alternative. So instead of £430 it's come down to £278. I haven't looked at the price comparison companies as when I did last year there were so many ifs and buts, ie business use, protected no claims, etc I gave up. Anyone used Sheilas' Wheels before? Or maybe it's a brand new company. By the way, Sheilas' Wheels is only for women drivers :D .
  • We had the annual renewal quotation through from Zurich (previously Eagle Star) for £391.

I had forgotten to sort it out so went online to just pay up - being too lazy to start checking for alternative quotes.

Didn't have the necessary form with me to remember the policy number, so did it as a new quote.

Entering exactly the same information as they already had, I got a new quote for £241. That's £150 cheaper from the same company, for the same car.

I know that you can get online discounts, but how can a company get away with this?

The main lesson here I guess is always double check the company that you are with.

The second lesson (which I learnt from this site) is to check whether your insurer is on GreasyPalm and so on - Zurich were so I get an extra £15 back from that link, then the 1% cash back on the credit card.

    Thanks Martin!

    Cheers,

    Matthew

DO NOT rely on the displayed results being accurate from a comparison site!
    ****

I ran a quote through InsureSupermarket.com for our car for fully comprehensive. The cheapest was More Th>n with "Fully Comprehensive Annual Premium: £228.76".

Unfortunately, the "Proceed" button takes me to the More Th>n site for a customised quote. Entering the same details obtains the same price (to the penny) but it only offers me "Third Party Only" - it is a 8 year old car. To make it worse, the More Th>n site doesn't ask offer comprehensive nor make it obvious that comprehensive insurance is not available - I almost missed this.

Therefore, don't trust whatever is displayed by a comparison site as accurate - they don't accept responsibility either (read the T's & C's)!!
  • Hi Martin

Following at tip from your website, we asked Swift Cover to quote for our car insurance - Citroen Xsara Picasso. They were not the cheapest, but were very close and saved us about £75 on our car insurance.

I then had a car accident and wrote my car off, and the help team were fantastic. I rang them and got straight through - no press 1 for this service, press 2 for that service. All my other dealings were then via email and 2 weeks later I received in to my bank account the money for the car ...... Thank you for your tip .....would recommend Swift Cover to anyone.

    Thanks

  • I have tried the 4 steps and had some very reasonable quotes. However last week my wife's car was broken into and we had to claim as there was a lot of damage done. Even though I only need to have my wife as a named driver the insurance quote jumps by £500 - £600approx  on the sites I have vistied when I say that we have had a claim in the last three years.

I don't have any option but to put her on the insurance as a named driver, but it is a lot of money to pay.

Does anyone have any ideas, please
  • :T I am also with Zurich. Following your advice I have saved £148.72 and cut my quote almost in half. I tried insuresupermarket and confused, found insuresupermarket quicker and easier to use although quotes very similar.

You do not have to be in a high risk group to cut the quotes, I didn't even need to change my insurers. A phone call resulted in a reference to Customer Loyalty Team, they checked their own online quote and matched it. Terrific site, thanks again.
  • Hi

My current car insurance with insureyourmotor.com runs through to 17th March 2006.

However, I am changing car this w/e. It will cost £98 extra to insure my ugrade (no refund if I change providers now), but providers have quoted £30.75 per WEEK to insure my current car until I sell it.

I have rung a few insurance companies, but they have said they don't provide temporary cover.

CAn anyone suggest insurance companies, who do provide temporary cover please?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hiya
First posting for me as a new girl.
Had to write to say that I can't believe that I have just saved a small fortune on car insurance using confused.com.
My husband has insurance on M reg Cinquecento which our 18 year old son (terrible inurance risk I know!) drives as a named driver. Renewal quote £ 1,065.
Confused.com cheapest was £640 with provident. Rang them to check details as thought I had entered something incorrectly, they said they couldn't guarantee same as web price, but checked it out and then came back with £560!!! the guy even checked with his supervisor and comfirmed quote.
All documentation now received, and everything looks great. Is this a huge saving or what.
Ringing round the various companies and using the web last year for original insurance was a nightmare, as no one really wants to insure an 18 year old boy, and the premiums were huge, more than the car was worth.

If you are providing feedback. It would be very helpful to hear the results of each of the steps. As this is a new system all feedback is greatly appreciated.

My fingers are crossed that it saves you some money though.

    hey guys,

Well I've just saved £1000 on car insurance thanks to Martin's tips.:j

My previous insurers wanted over £2200 to insure me, my husband and two sons aged 19 & 21 on an S reg. Skoda 1.3 (last year they charged just over £1100 to insure the four of us plus my 22 yr old son on a 1.3 Ford Escort - I thought the leap in price was OTT.) I had been phoning around and getting prices from £2200 up to over £4000 when I thought of checking what Martin had to say.

So I used both Confused.com and Insurancesupermarket.com and the cheapest I found was £1241.98 with Asda , a really big saving.

Must say that not all the prices quoted on the price comparison lists were entirely accurate - it's worthwhile phoning and checking up (I got one price for £685 but there was a computer glitch and they apologised when I phoned!)

    Thank You Martin :T
