I'm currently sorting out car insurance for a relative as I'm "so good at it". My experience when insuring my car was pretty good:
Age 18, £200 cheap banger type car (very good condition, but just old/cheap). I found the comparison services for be rubbish - All insurance companies have subtle differences in their forms/factors etc. and these sites just don't quite accomodate them all. For young drivers this is most a problem as chances are the quotes will be extra-stuipdly high (their high anyway, but for risk factors they don't know about properly they quote even higher).
What I did was simply sit down for one afternoon, use 18866 and basically phone about 50-60 companies and just churned out quotes. The cheapest came to about £970. I then asked who it was under written by, but they wouldn't tell me. So I did a few searches on the net and on google groups and found out. Called the underwriters directly (Norwich Union Direct, in this case) and got a quote for £900.
That was it. After that, I haggled and haggled. After the final price I requested a further 5% off as that is what they were offering if I buy it online. They awarded that as well.
The key thing is, truely shop around and spend loads of time over it. If you are a truely safe driver with very few claims/accidents then there's no reason not to 'argue' about the cost: "I'm a safe driver and the car only costs 2pence, blah blah"...
Good luck!0 -
Here is one for you.
This year's insurance for my car is £402.27. I just received my renewal for that insurance which is £412.57.
Thing is the same company (MoreThan) ended up being the cheapest for me when I generated a new quote early on in November. So, I've paid £360.86. All because I didn't wait for the renewal notice, but very early on got an online quote and accepted it so it starts when this year's car insurance expires.
All because I didn't wait for a insurance renewal notice and just went and got a new policy with the same company!?
Have I found a loophole, or could this be because I got a quote as far away from December as I could?
Do insurance companies hike up their prices the nearer Christmas approaches? Or, am I simply lucky and got a quite when insurance priced were low?
I dunno. Somone please educate me?0 -
Most people accept their renewal quote and just pay it. You did a new quote, so that could quite easily look like a new customer which is more benefit to them for later (higher) renewals etc.0

Hi
What is the best 4 a husband & wife with 2 cars?
I wonder if you can show me the best way to insure my car. It's the renew date and I'm not sure what to do! (might sound stupid
Here is the situation:
We have 2 cars which belong to each of us.
His is insured under liverpool victoria(exp: August) and mine under Tesco. (expiery date: tomorrow!)
Both cars have been insured under the owner's name with the spouse as a 2nd driver.
He always uses our family Ford Mondeo car(owner: me) to go to work and I take his(the cheapest & smallest car) for going shopping!
We both had a 9 year no claim discount before an accident:
My husband had the accident driving my car on his way to work. As mentioned, he was covered as a 2nd driver under my insurance. Tesco says it had some effect on my insurance premium, too!!!
NOW:
What's the best and cheapest way for insuring the cheap car? Same other car insurance company(Liverpool Victoria) or renewing Tesco insurance?
Should I insure this car under his name as his second car and put my name as a second driver?(I rarely drive this car although I'm the legal owner.)
Or as before insure it under my name and add him as a 2nd driver?

Many thanks for the info in this post. I started with confused.com and was not surprised when Norwich Union Direct came up with the best price. I phoned them to check a few details and ended up getting 14 months for the price of 12 plus a further discount for having house insurance with them. Adding "the wife" saved us more money, even tho I am a learner. Even the operator seemed surprised at that. We have saved about £300 by switching insurer, and because we could afford to pay that outright we saved even more! Many MANY thanks.0

I SAVED ABOUT £20 BY GIVING A LOWER ANNAUL MILEAGE. DIG OUT YOUR OLD MOT AND GET MILEAGE OFF IT TO WORK OUT TRUE TOTAL. WHEN INSURANCE COMPANYS ASK MOST PEOPLE ESTERMATE WAY TOO HIGHO0

After trawling through a great many sites and companies, I thought that Adrian Flux was going to be the cheapest however a different company - Quinn Direct beat their premium and offered protected no claims bonus.
I found that they offered a cheaper premium over the phone than via their website but details can be found here:
https://www.quinn-direct.com
However they didn't seem to offer anything like Windscreen Cover or a Courtesy Car.....
Just to give you an idea of the range of premiums from other companies:
Adrian Flux - £446
Quinn Direct - £445 (Protected NCB) / £385 (Non-Protected)
Confused.Com - £625
Tesco - £680
Direct Line - £750You gotta be in it to win it, and who knows you might even get a Brucie!0 -
I am new to this money game bear with me!
How do you all pay for your insurance?
I assume,if you get the very best deal, you pay with a debit card or a 0% credit card as not to attract interest chareges?
In the past i have always rang a few companies to get a good quote, but then always paid over 10-12 months,i didn't even consider how much i was being charged for this.Sponsored by Tesco Clubcard Points !!0 -
I have just got my renewal through for two cars, both insured for me and my partner to drive, fully comp.
Liverpool Victoria - £528 for renewal
Nationwide quote - £519
Zurich I accepted - £443 with improved cover!
I think that shopping on-line helps

I tried confused .com (CONFUSED being the operative word)
The quotes ranged from £1626 down to £684.
My iinsurer CHURCHILL beat the lowest quote by £100 at £584.
Maybe others may want to try this company.
Best wishes to all.0
