My insurance tried to pull a fast one today. Knowing my car insurance was due for renewal on Sunday they sent me a reminder today (Friday). Well they're closed for the weekend and as they quoted me the same price as last year £515.60. I decided to shop around and found the cheapest insurance at

    http://www.autodirect.co.uk.

I now have to pay £294.07.

So it does pay to shop around :D

You might be able to sympathise with me on this one.  I am a local radio journalist and as soon as insurance firms hear this they jack up the premium or turn me down.  It's really annoying because the job is just like an office job and I certainly don't carry big stars around in my car which must be what the firms are worried about.

My question is, do I fail to mention what I do for a living?  The egg site has a drop down list  and I have selected "professional" for my job title.  If I have an accident how will anyone know what I do for a living or will anyone even ask?

Hmm a dilemma, but I'm fed up for being penalised for my job.

Wifey's Car Insurance renewal due this week.

Privelege renewal quote was £249, £14 more than last year (no bumps, claims etec etc)

Followed advice and went through confused.com and ended up with Norwich Union at £186, plus a £25 cashback as she is a new customer.

My insurance was due by Direct Line £205 or so (3rd party only). It was a few more quid than last year!!!

Managed to get £160 + £25 cashback from Norwich Union, and this was at TPF&T.

I used confused last year for car insurance as I hardly use my car and is nearly always park in a garage I always feel I am getting ripepd off as I rarely sue teh car occasion weeked trip in country or shopping with misses at supertmarket.

Anyhow last year (nov 1st) I got a deal with Norwich union for £180 and a £50 discount for 1st time customer, I was pleased with the deal as many others were more. This year tried confused again and got a deal with same company for £121 plus £25 discount for new customers. So what I might do is this i it works. Let my insurance elapse one day (it will be off road as its private land) and join as a new customer. If not then its still a better deal than my renew is from same company £176.02

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you
  • having read all about the Egg car insuarnce deal on your site - I thought it would be useful to let any other potential 'eggs' know the pitfalls. Yes the £50 csah back is still happening but the 10% discount for buying online is fiction.

I got 3 telephpne quotes on 3 seperate days and all were the same. when I asked if I bought online if I would get a further 10% discount as they advertised and was told yes. One lady even told me she would 'try to sort something out' if I was to buy it over the phone. When I went online and went through the whole process the insurance turned out to be over a pound more expensive then my phone quotes rather than the expected £30 cheaper! Naturally I sent them a snotty mail abd was told that prices fluctuate form day to day -while I'm sure that is case it does not account for phone quotes on 3 seperate days being the same and phone and online quotes being different in the space of 20mins.
As a result I am warning people to buy by phone or not at all. I am currently looking into balance transfers so Egg doesn't get any more of my money.

Technically I think you still need to declare your car as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification).

I've managed to do mine through Nationwide. AA quoted me £284. Nationwide (underwritten by Churchill) £154.

I used the search engines suggested by Martin and they also did fabulously, and nearly bought through them before I checked Nationwide.

Wow - nothing different, only for a Ford Ka, 6 years no claims and the only claim I've made has been for a windscreen replacement....I was truely shocked at the price difference!

    Thanks
  • I am having problems getting my £50 back from Egg.

I paid for my car insurance in full 2 months ago, not with an Egg card but I do have their savings account. I have emailed them and was told to phone the insurance arm, who told me that it wasn't their responsibility but the bank's, and that there is a backlog of payments and no timescale for when I will get it.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone help?

Did not have much time when I looked at this (2 days to renewal) so tried confused.com. The site crashed half way through so gave up and tried https://www.insuresupermarket.com, which was logical and straightforward, took about 15 minutes for the better half to enter all the details, plus a couple of hours checking out the top four quotes

Sp, this has saved us £200 on our insurance and took just a couple of hours - worth doing!

PS The cover is the same and is with Esure, so happy am dealing with a "known brand"

    Thanks!
