    Adewton have you read all the complains in this forum about Virgin Media ???
    dear dear
    Virgin are no worse (or better) than any other ISP, its unfortunate but people are more willing to complain about things rather than praise. Personally we've had a totally reliable service from them over the past couple of years and on the rare occasions when we've had to call tech support they've been fantastic, a lot of people around here (new build estate that was cabled as standard, rather than having BT installed) have Virgin services and the vast majority of them are more than happy. However I realise that just because we've had good service doesn't mean other people haven't had their problems, my point is that I doubt there is any ISP that doesn't get a bad write-up on forums like this.

    I was told I could not upgrade my speed as I'm too far from BT exchange.:eek: I'm considering Virgin cable at higher speed. Would that be a wise decision or should I look elsewhere.:confused:
    If you're too far from the exchange then its unlikely that any other ADSL provider will be able to give you a higher speed either as its the technology that's limiting your connection: the DSL signals degrade over distance. In which case cable is your only option as that isn't distance-dependant.

    Anyway....to get back to the original question, quite a number of people are reporting problems with Vista and not being able to access the internet and unfortunately Virgins tech support are proving to be less than useful dealing with it. Apparently one issue that often gets overlooked is that a lot of Vista machines when new are automatically in offline mode (ie. won't access the internet unless you change the settings manually) so its worth checking this.

  • I've had NTL broadband (NTL been bought by Virgin) for over 3 years and had no problems at all. :)

    You seem to be making an argument with yourself, any decent ISP would sort that out in a couple of minutes for their customer.

    You obviously don't read ISP Forums either, you would soon see that Virgin, Tiscali etc. are crap ISP's, according to their customers.

    No, they just have a larger user base which therefore means that more people complain. It doesn't necessarily make them any worse.

    How can disagree with my post?

    I didn't claim they were better or worse than anyone else.

    I think you are just a Virgin basher.

    Nope, I just read all of the adverse comments from Virgin users.

    Read some here;

    You will find Virgin ADSL second from the bottom of the page, they can't all be wrong.

    No I'm not, I never claimed they were pefect, in fact I quite clearly stated that although we have had great service from them I am also aware that other people haven't. Which, incidentally, could be said of any of their competitors too.

    Actually I do, and you're missing the point...the people who post on internet forums are not a representative sample of any ISP's customer base so you will always have a bias towards complaints as people rarely come onto a forum with the express purpose of praising a company. And as robt says, the bigger the ISP the more complaints there are (BT also come in for a lot of criticsm...spot a pattern?). You need to be looking at the number of valid complaints per 1000 subscribers to tell which are the statistically "best" and "worst" ISPs - and even then people will disagree depending on their own personal experiences.

    The only pattern that I see are the poor ISP's such as Virgin, Tiscali, BT etc. that stitch in customers for long contracts, then offer little real support to their customers, together with poor speeds etc. due to squeezing too many customers on to their overloaded systems.

    Usually with non UK based support that can only be accessed by a premium rate number, then staffed by script monkeys.
