Virgin Broadband & Vista

I am currently on Virgin's Bundle 3 (non-cable broadband, low usage with free weekend and evening calls) at £9.99 a month. I have just purchased a new laptop, with Vista, and the modem supplied by Virgin does not work. It's a Thomson SpeedTouch, and I have followed Thomson's instructions for installing Vista compatible drivers, but it still won't work.

Virgin's response is that I need to upgrade to their next package, costing an extra £5 per month, for additional speed and a wireless router that I don't need.

I'm thinking of switching but am struggling to find a package at a similar cost - the only one I have found is with PlusNet, and this will mean paying them for line rental instead of BT. Does anyone know what their service is like?

Also, just to warn other Virgin customers that there are problems with Vista!

just buy a wireless adsl router, like the dg834G Virgin supply.

    What modem is it?

I find it hard to believe it doesn't work with Vista. Does it connect with USB or Ethernet?

I had the same problem with my neighbours connection.

I cured that by uninstalling all the crap that virgin gave me and the thomson drivers that dont work and used these.

    No problems after that.

I've been with Sky for a year and I hated every minute of it. I'm on their 8MB but get 6mb. I was told I could not upgrade my speed as I'm too far from BT exchange. I'm considering Virgin cable at higher speed. Would that be a wise decision or should I look elsewhere.

It's the SpeedTouch 330 USB modem. I had already tried using the drivers from the Thomson website, after calling their helpdesk and speaking to an adviser. He was very helpful, but said he couldn't guarantee that the new drivers would work, and if they didn't, there is nothing else that can be done as it's an old product that Thomson are no longer developing.

Thanks albertross. I've picked up a Netgear router on Ebay for about £20, which would be the same as the connection fee at PlusNet, so I'll give that a try with my existing Virgin connection...

It is an adsl wireless router, not cable/dsl?

sorry to hear of your problems. I migrated from pipex to virgin adsl last weekend on the £14.99 package. I had no issues with the speedtouch modem working on vista home premium - had it setup as per instructions and running within 5 minutes. I can not believe changing package would have any bearing on using the speedtouch modem. Drivers as per installation disc used.

    Good luck with your router!
  • Hi Sarahllord, any luck with that router ? and if so can you let me know the model number etc as I am just trying to install the speedtouch 330 on my new vista laptop and appear to be having the same problems !!!Any advice appreciated !!!!
