Nappy advice

    Hi

I used 'the nappy lady' for advice of which ones to use. I wanted to use velcro so tried both motherease and tots bots. Motherease wraps were the best, very easy to use. Their nappies i didn't like at all, very thin and couldn't get hang of poppers on them. Tots bots were fab, great colours, easy to use and wash, comfy on little one and cute too!

I bought new and sold when finished, i have to confess to stopping when DD was 8 months after extreme nappy rash nothing would shift, i tried gp, and every tip on the web only to find disposables suited her better, but for 8 months no probs, seemed to be the teething that changed things for us. I had bought the sized nappies anyhow so hadn't lost any money.

I was advised to buy one of each nappy and see which i prefered, most people find the tots the best though.

Ok, I've put a request on freecycle and have been offered a full bambino mio birth to potty set + accessories. :T Prefolds are not my first choice of nappy but I think this offer is too good to pass up.

I still haven't used my £40 voucher from the council so will probably buy some tots bots with this.

So what do I need to need to know about prefolds?

    TIA

Fantastic! Let the debate continue. I'm after quick drying as I live in a flat with minimal room, although i've a garden, no tumble tho! THanks ofr everyone who contributed.Jxxx

if you want quick drying then you really need to go with terry squares & flannel boosters as they dry the quickest. wrap wise, then as suggested by near enough everyone else, go for motherease rikki wraps.

to help speed up the drying process (if you dont want to invest in a tumble dryer), then get yourself a spinner (£20 max 2nd hand or commonplace on freecycle). they get out so much more water than the spin cycle on a washing machine

if you arent worried about bulk, then prefolds are great. although somtimes the bulk means the poo/wee tends to run off the sides onto the wrap, so the containment isnt as great as a fitted nappy. also dont be disillusioned in the early days, prefolds reach their best absorbency after a couple of months of use, so to start with they may seem like they arent doing the job, but just give it time. if you can, it may be wise to wash and use them yourself for a while, so they are worn in before baby uses them (no i dont mean wear them yourself, i mean use, then as flannels, hand towels, etc, so the fibres get softened up from use, and being washed) Honestly you tend to find that really old prefolds work alot better than newer ones, so well used 2nd hand ones, are great

also the good thing about prefolds is, they come in handy even after your baby is out of nappies, as they make lovely cleaning cloths.

just one word though, ditch the wraps that come with the kit, and invest in some motherease ones

You could always double spin the washing in the dryer. My (digital dial) washing machine only lets me spin at a maximum of 800 on most pre set programs but will let me do 1600 as a separate program after. My mums has a manual dial which lets her pick 1600 from the start but she will still double spin towels and sheets.

i know, but i still find the seperate spinner gets them dryer than any washing machine ive used

  • TBH there is no "best" nappy!!

You will find at every age and stage some suit you better than others for different reasons. DD2 was in cloth from quite young as she reacted to disps and I had little trouble- even with a childminder, but different nappies at different times.

My all time fave, hands down were terry squares:T REal MSE and honestly little trouble- very fast wash and dry. Learning different folds was useful, nappy nippas initially, and pad folds (in wraps or pocket nappies) but even (gasp!) pins when I got brave!

The key to any nappy though was the wrap- motherease were easily the nicest- the velcro ones over a terry were great. Poppered ones over a shaped nappy were easy too.

I did use kushies AIOs and fuzzi buns stuffables for the CM but really I wasn't a great fan of 1 piece nappies for me to use- slow to dry and leak prone.

If I were nappying a baby again I'd but a doz lovely thick terries new, and a selection of shaped/AIO etc 2nd hand. I would not be fooled into a "birth to potty" pack- Bambino mio prefolds/wraps never really worked for me (the wraps leaked and got very mucky unless you pinned the prefolds) though I understands they are easily available. Even the motherease ones size are good but not really "fits all" nappies...

Slightly off topic but where is the best place to sell my entire system, tots bots bamboozles and all required paraphernalia? Got kicked off ebay as didn't know about new rules and sets on usednappy didn't seem to go for as much as they would have done on ebay. Is this a general trend now?
Good for you for trying re-usables. Best thing i did although family and friends thought i'd turned into some kind of super green earth mother. Just wanted to save a bit of cash! Kids never got nappy rash and 21 month old now choosing to sit on potty than wear nappy..brilliant

We're using One Life, very similar to MotherEase and have actually bought MotherEase wraps to go with them so we had some funky covers.
The only thing I have found and I'm not sure if this is the case with all nappies this type is they are starting to look a bit small on my DS and we only have one bigger size left on the poppers - he's only 8 months old.
Otherwise I'm very impressed. I did have a problem with the elastic in the One Lifes when he was 3 months old and had 6 of them relpaced becasue the elastic went, but One Life swapped them with no questions.
If you decide to get a birth to potty pack, really do your homework on prices, we bought ours direct from One Life at the baby show and even though we got a discount I still found them £80 cheaper than the discounted price for exactly the same pack on the web.
They haven't stopped my DS from getting nappy rash, but I'm sure they helped him to sit up unsupported earlier as he had a bigger base to balance on. He was sitting up by 4 and half months in reusables, had problems balancing if we used disposals.

I wouldn't worry too much about this at this stage. As he's only 8 months old I imagine he's not moving around a huge amount (maybe just starting to crawl??). You will find at as soon as he starts crawling and walking, he will slim down a bit and the nappies will fit better. Not that I'm suggesting you have a chubby boy, but you know what I mean! My DD used Motherease Onesize, amongst other things, right up until she was potty trained at about 2 1/2 and she definitely went through a stage where the nappies were looking a bit small!

To the original poster.... it's such a difficult question to answer as what suits other people may not necessarily suit you. I would say one of the most important things is to get advice as to what will be best for you specifically, and don't buy a birth to potty pack straight away. Test a few out and see how you like them, how they fit, how quickly they dry etc. etc. before making a decision. Check and see if you've got a local advisor who will be able to show you all the different options, on this website...
