Still toying with the idea of sock knitting.  Could I ask a couple of very basic questions?
1  Is it possible to knit socks on circulars - or had I better get some DPNs?
2  Is there a reliable, easy, preferably free(!) pattern for chunky-knit longer length/slipper socks?

    Thanks in advance.

I think you might be better trying dpns for socks. There are too few stitches for circulars. Even if I'm  knitting a hat on circulars  I find it easier  to change to dpns once I start to decrease. I've not knitted socks in chunky but have you tried looking on Ravelry for a pattern?

Yes, it is possible to knit socks on circulars. I made mine on two short circulars, knitting the front then the back in a round, but I still needed dpns for the toe decreases.
Check out www.winwickmum.co.uk for free patterns in sock yarn, 4 ply, 6 ply and DK, with YouTube tutorials if you get stuck! Also free patterns on Ravelry and Lovecrafts.
Chunky knit patterns on Ravelry and Lovecrafts, just do a search. You will probably have to create a free account to download them.
Not a lot of longer length patterns, but there was a slouchy one which looked a bit longer. HTH 🙂

I have tried socks on circulars but you're forever hauling around the cable so I've used DPNs, and most recently Addi CrasyTrio needles. I like Mrs CD's idea of two short circulars, I think the CrasyTrio are the same principle.

What I think has revolutionised my life is the suggestion to knit a couple of rows straight before joining 'in the round'!

And I can tell you that if you are ever struggling to sleep, a google for knitting socks will bring you enough entertainment to keep you going until you nod off, and beyond. Including the intriguing suggestion of knitting one sock inside the other in the round - apparently mentioned in War and Peace. If you add chunky knit longer length slipper socks your choice of patterns will probably overwhelm you.

The socks and handwarmers. I've just started another pair of handwarmers in chunky wool for me, just seeing how the pattern pans out.

They are lovely. Must try knitting socks in thicker yarn but will need to buy the right sized needles.

I know I wouldn't want socks in thicker yard: I've done a couple of pairs myself, plus mum had done several for me, and I find them quite warm and sufficiently bulky!

I hadn't heard of the Addi CraSyTrio needles, so thanks for the info. They look really good. I also knit a couple of rows before joining up. It saves so much frustration trying to make sure it's not twisted!

Lovely socks and handwarmers, by the way. The colour is just right for Autumn.
