HS, I don`t bother with any patterned socks, I like the plain vanilla pattern and love using the different yarns to see what colour combos appear as if by magic. I am careful to pull wool out of the ball before the second sock, so that the colout combo matches in each sock. I do have lots of sock patterns but vanilla (plain) are favourite

I've made vanilla socks (good for car time/queueing/etc), but I usually get bored with them. I've got plans for 4 different patterned socks (though 1 is ribbing/vanilla with a weird heel, so not too bad), so I'm sure plain vanilla will be quite appealing after that. :)

The Al Fresco looks lovely, looks like it could be thrown on over anything.

the yarn from noro is indeed a single ply  I didn`t realise when I bought it online. It is very soft as in fragile in breaking the strand, imagine fluff just gently spun. It won`t wear well, I know that and I will have to be very careful when washing it. Even wearing a pendant will cause the yarn to fluff into a fluffy shape where the pendant sits. It is a very quick satisfying knit and wasn`t madly expensive but I will wear it carefully ie for going out and not around the house on a normal day. Washing would likely work in my wm, which is a miele with a wool/hand wash but I need to be even more careful than that ie squeeeze, lift carefully and into a spin drier (one way rotation)
  • crikey it really is a quick easy knit, I can do it watching tv. There are lots of stitches, at the moment I am working from bottom side up and down to other side bottom. I cannot see me altering the pattern any more, I reduced the sleeve length but the slightly tighter gauge will automatically reduce the garment width. I just need to make sure that the middle bit, over the shoulders is a slightly smaller length ie 8" not 9" but the fact that this has such a lot of ease makes it easy if my allowances are wrong

kittie: Thanks for the info about blockers - really interesting. I gather that it's best to get blockers that are within a size or two of the size being knitted so that they help to create the shape but don't stretch the garment too much? I've found some that sound like the ones you describe on ebay

You can also make them from cardboard or coat hangers. I'm sure I've seen templates online (though I got my blockers as a destash on Rav).

al fresco is going well, a very easy mindless knit, until it came to crossing the front and that left me in a tizz yesterday. I tried every which way to make sure that all the bits were the right way. Ended up by tacking one sleeve and one side seam, which helped. I have no doubt it is all on track but I won`t know until the end. I am on the last sections now, just straightforward stocking stitch for the side and then the sleeve, all in one piece and fortunately I will have enough yarn

drat, I reached a blip last night, could not see the direction of any of that top, then, at last worked out that one join was twisted, so I frogged two balls worth. Oh well, I still like the pattern. I picked up stitches, did one row and went to bed way after bedtime. This morning my right index finger joint, already nobbly, was very sore so I could not use it for knitting, need to rest it. Frustrating when the end is in sight

I decided to learn to knit with yarn in left hand and it is working, so far I am much slower but am getting the hang of it, brain training after 60 years of my style. Did one row of purl and one of knit, over 200 stitches on a row. It is the perfect yarn for this because of the uneven texture. I can see that this new way of knitting could potentially be much quicker, although I will have to go some to beat my normal speed

You're Noro-ing as well? A lovely friend sent me some Noro Kureyon she'd had hanging around for years, and to my astonishment I now have almost got a high-V neck cardigan with short puffed sleeves, fitted and ribbed at the waist and sleeve-cuffs, in glorious turquoises and blues and greens and pinks and purples and magenta... I made it in one seamless piece, making it up as I went, and it has worked superbly well for me, only the buttons and the velvet ribbon backing the button-band to sew on now...

I am liking noro Laura, for the beautiful colours and interesting texture. I did a couple more rows last light and am working out ways in which to give my index finger a rest. I also wore an imak glove on my right hand last night. It is a support glove and it helps. I use a variety of supports and splints, depends on what aches on my hand and that depends on the hobby. I should be back to normal in a couple of days but will take this left handed knitting further as it is very quick for knit stitch. I generally only need the supports overnight

I am going to take a long break from knitting when I have finished the current garment. My index finger joints are still sore but I am trying to learn the left handed style of knitting, think it is called continental. The knit stitch is very fast but purl is not
