There was a letter in an old knitting mag about this so I dug through them and found it. Someone has posted the same query and the answer is this:
2 strands of 4-ply = 1 stand of DK
2 strands of DK = 1 strand of aran
2 strands of aran = 1 strand of chunky.
I suppose there is a certain amount of variation but it's a general guide.
So according to this you would need 4 strands of DK to make chunky.

Lambanana, I like these socks, which pattern did you use?
I didn't use a patternI've knit so many pairs of plain socks now I don't need one! The wool patterned itself, it's one of the Trekking XXL colours, I got it from www.modernknitting.co.uk and it is lovely stuff, I'd recommend it. You could knit the same style of sock using Silver's sock class: http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm or the violet green sock generator: http://violetgreen.co.uk/sock_pattern_calculator.php
The ribbing is twisted ribbing (K1tbl, p1) which I think makes lovely, neat ribbing.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member #398 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts :T

That is so clever not needing a pattern, I could never imagine knitting socks without one :rotfl:
So I guess, as I'm already using Silver's pattern, I could just shorten the rib so it looks more like your socks. That was the thing I liked about yours was the little ribbing part.
And thanks for the additional website.Did owe £9,951.96
