These look really good. The stripey one will be really warm and I am always fascinated by the self patterning yarns - so clever and so effective. I haven't knitted fairisle for years and years - not my favourite - but these yarns give a similar effect so easily!

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me I was thinking of knitting two balls of double knitting wool together would this be the same as using chunky wool please......
Depends on the DK and chunky in question. I have done various options, from 2 or 3 to 4 strands of DK. Best is to do a gauge swatch and test for yourself. I noticed some of my DKs are considerably thinner than the other ones0 -
I was wondering if there was a better way to sew up a hat or beret (which is what I've knitted for myself) so that it makes it more comfortable to wear. Would like to get this finished so I can start wearing it to keep warm in this cold weather.Did owe £9,951.96

Hiya
Was wondering if anyone had subbed this for another wool? I've managed to snag two x 500g balls of it in a sale but really aren't that keen on any of the patterns in the Rowan book for this wool. I've done a test gauge and know I can sub it for the Debbie Bliss Cathay, I'm pretty sure that with some needle adjustment I can sub it for the Rowan Purelife too. Just wondered if someone else had already been there and done that?!0 -
Can I ask a daft question please - is there a difference between sock yarn and normal yarn and if so what is it?
jennyjelly Thankyou for the Dalek pattern link!! They are fantastic and I can think of a few people who would love them
cuddles - gorgeous cable mug hugs
pigpen Love the jumper and cardy
I'm still knitting fingerless gloves - to say they're driving me crazy is putting it mildly - I've made loads of gloves before but this pattern is a nightmare. I think I've made the thumb about 4 times so far and ripped it back to the wrist twice... I'll post a pic of them if I ever get them finished :rotfl:0 -

Specific yarn labelled as 'sock yarn' will have been blended to make it the more durable and also easier to wash. I find my 'sock yarns' feel almost more smooth than normal 4ply yarns and definitely feel more expensive. I have knitted socks with other yarns (eg DK), but mainly as bed socks, and not for everyday wear. Socks that I plan to wear out and about and with shoes would ideally be a 'proper' sock yarn such as Regia, Schoeller and Stahl Fortissima Socka Mexiko, Trekker or similar. Thank you OrkneyStar - that makes perfect sense - I wasn't sure if it was finer wool, I never even thought of durability (d'oh!). I'll try them out now :beer:0
