I do know that shop but never go in there, its a old fashioned department store... I might take the bus over there and take a look, I also wonder if somewhere like Debenhams might sell wool as there is one in Uxbridge... well it'll give me an excuse to go looking lol... thanks...

I agree with Blueberrypie - Ravelry is a great resource for patterns and even has an MSE group - although it is pretty quiet at the moment.

I joined last year and found earlier this year a local group was formed - so we now meet on Thursday evenings for coffee, cake, knitting and gossip :D.
Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever :D

I am thinking of making this shawl to go with a dress I'm planning to buy to wear to a couple of weddings and was wondering if somebody could suggest an appropriate, cheap yarn as I'm not too good at finding alternative yarns to make knitted garments with.

That's so pretty. I would use 2 strands of this held together, that way you would need 3 balls and your shawl would only cost a tenner.

Jennyjelly, thank you that looks like lovely wool. I have double checked the amount of wool I would need and I think I would need to buy four balls of wool (as below) as 2 balls of this wool would cover about half of it.

    Yarn: 2ply, laceweight, 100g (1180m approx)
    Needles: 4mm
Note: this is the correct total amount of yarn for the whole shawl

Now I just have to wait for the dress I've ordered to arrive to make sure it looks ok and then get knitting fast.

    Thanks :j

Alternatively, would any 2 ply wool be ok?

I love making shawls out of laceweight from colourmart. To me, if I'm going to put all that time into making a lace shawl then I think it's worth making it out of a "luxury" yarn and hope it becomes an heirloom. And that's why I like colourmart! When you can buy 3000 yards of pure cashmere for £20 inc postage or over 2000 yards of cahsmere/silk/merino blend for £12 what's not to love!

    Hi Angel

I have had a look at that website and there is so much choice. Which types of yarn do you suggest would be good for a shawl? I'm not very good at knowing which yarn is right. It's all gobbledegook to me :rotfl:

I've not come across this site before - isn't it fabulous!:j

I've been yearing to make a cobweb weight "wedding ring" shawl but wasn't sure about the investment in case I made a mess of it (I'm not the workld's most experienced lace knitter, having only ever made one lace scarf before!), but this site makes it very affordable. I shall be having a good old browse when I have some free time.

A much more useful response than mine I think, thank you!:T

Don't be too harsh on yourself jj, you certainly helped me when I needed it. I do have to agree with you about that other website though, thing is with so much to choose from how is a novice like me supposed to know which yarn to choose

    Too much choice!!!

I cant' get my head around the weight/thickness NM thing though - I've read the explanation but can't seem to relate it to how it will actually look and feel.

For example, how would I choose the right yarn for something like this http://www.ravelry.com/projects/blakdove/rona-lace-shawl ?

Not that I'm being quite that ambitious you understand, but just as an example.

(sorry for adding my question to your thread lynseydee, but hopefully the answer will interest you too!)

That's ok, I don't understand the NM thing either, which is why I need some help. I have sent them a message through their contact us asking for some recommendations/suggestions so will see what they say.

That shawl is lovely but I know what you mean about being ambitious. I'm hoping the shawl I want to do isn't going to prove to be too daunting.
