Help! My new Dell Laptop! 2 year old spills juice on it!!

    Im so livid

I went off for a shower asking a friend who is visiting to watch the kids and I come down ten minutes later to fine my 2 year old standing over my laptop with an empty glass. The laptop is new and only a month old :confused::confused::confused:

Ive tried drying the keys but it wont come on (just a green light for 2 secs). I then tipped it onto its side and more juice came out :(

Is there hope? My additional warranty papers are in the post. Will this come alive again? So upset, I could cry :'( :'(

  • i did this the other day! so i turned it upside, open for the whole night, and by the morning i managed to switch it on, altho the keyboard does not work, and when i rung a handyman he said the keyboard would need to be stripped asap before it drys in. So i would let it dry out first then try switch it on and see what the damage is.

It might, you could remove the hard disc, CD/DRD drive, the RAM and any other cards easily accessible and douse the keyboard in cold water to wash off the stickness, but it may make it worse, it's a risk yoy might want to take. If it's dead now, it's unlikely it'll come back into life.

If you can remove the keyboard (which you should be able to if you are very careful), you can wash this in cold water under a tap, and let dry in a warm place for 3-5 days.
  • oh and u must make sure it is switched off propely to dry out, its important.
  • thanks to you both. Have phoned dh who will call his techie friend. It was that Dell Vostro for about £255 that was on offer a little while ago.

I really do hope we can save it! If I decide to go and make a claim will it be a simple procedure??

  • when ours had dried out we took the battery out and back in, then it started up! do not put water on it, you need to leave that to sum 1 who knows what they are doing.

If it was only water and you allow it to dry out thoroughly before turning it on then you have a chance of it surviving. Looking at this though, it's juice which makes it worse, plus you tried to power it on when still wet, so it is looking unlikely it will survive.

Let it dry out thoroughly over a few days and try powering it back on again.
  • Any chance of it being insured/covered as part of the house contents?

Orange juice is evil stuff - the sugar is sticky, and the acid will slowly eat through thin metal parts.

remove the battery and soak the lappy in the bath for a bit. clean water only. swish it around for a while.
then let it dry in a dry warm place for a least a week before trying it again.

    do not try to cheat!

I once swam in the river Esk, a particularly polluted river in the Lothians, for a full two minutes a couple of years ago with my Motorola V500 fully submerged in my pocket, and after a week of drying, it came back to life, and I still use it as my main phone to this day. There's always hope!

This is the best advice, but I'd recommend avoiding submerging the screen (might be tricky to dry out again,) and taking as many easily removable parts out as possible before soaking, and while drying (e.g RAM module, hard disk, definately battery.) Your techie friend should help.

And leave it open while it dries! Good luck.

    Hi

Dell Vostro laptops are supposed to have a:

Mylar® -sealed keyboard helps guard against dust and spills
    (from dell.co.uk website)

If the laptop is no longer working you might be able to claim a replacement from Dell.
