We bought Lindam pressure mounted stair gates, but our house is so narrow (Victorian terrace) that they don't fit anywhere. They are too wide for the stairs and doorways.

We have managed to get one to fit in the hallway to block off both the stairs and the front door as it opens out onto a main road, but we have to take it down every week to get the dustbin out.

I am willing to be converted! Any tips on how to get to grips with them one- handed with a wriggling toddler under yoru arm?:rotfl:

If you push your leg against the stairgate as you use your thumb to press down and forward on the catch this gives you the leverage to use the same hand as moved the catch to unhook the stairgate (as you now have the slack that the leg created by pushing the stairgate forward slightly when you opened the catch). hope that makes sense!

I also find it is possible to climb over them, I am 5ft 4" with short legs, but I am still able to lob a leg over the top and follow through with the other without any problems, this I tend to do when I am wanting my son to stay in the room and for me to escape!

Also the getting your head under the gate passes, my son had a huge amount of interest in it at first and now it is just part of the furniture!

    Good luck

I'd done some research and decided on the Lindam Easy fit premium from Argos

    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3753282.htm

Reserved it and collected it today but when I opened the box it was a BabyDan Premier Pressure Gate!

Anybody advise if this any good or shall i take it back?

Ok i currently have a babydan stairgate at the top of stairs and somehow lo has managed to open it and fell down the stairs and broke his arm, currently in hospital waiting to go into theatre!!

I am in urgent need of a really secure stairgate, is there such a thing? this is our 2nd stairgate he has managed to open and need a complete childproof one, he is 2.

    Any reccommendations???

I'm sorry to hear that kyle.

I'm going to move your thread to the 'Marriages, Relationships & Families' board because I think you'll get more views from mums there.;)

I hope you find something quickly.................and lo gets better soon.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Hi I really like my Lindam double lock safety gate. You not only have to pinch together the "lock" with one hand to flip open the latch but you also have to move round the plastic clip at the bottom that acts as a second lock. It's bloody fiddly and actually I have sellotaped open the second lock but if it's safety you're after then I think this would be ideal.

I'm ever so sorry to hear about your poor lo and really hope they're on the mend asap.

EDIT: They're £20 from Argos or Babies R Us last time I looked (this year for 2nd one).

Hope your LO is OK :-)

You could have a look at dog gates like this one and this one. They are basically the same as baby gates but are usually higher and a bit sturdier.

I would suggest a Kiddiguard, which is the one like a roller blind. They are expensive but ours have been well worth the money I think. The opening mechanism can be operated one handed, but there is a certain knack to it, the button has to be pushed forward and back to open. We still use ours at night to prevent our little one going walkabout, he is nearly 5, and still has no idea how to open it.

I would suggest having a word with the Manufacturer, surely they have some reponsilbilty to the ease at which your LO (sorry whats lo?) opened this gate!
