Whichever type you go for, make sure you can open it with one hand. Becuase if you're holding baby there is nothing worse than having to fiddle with the gate which needs both hands and involves puting babe down.

I would agree that most of the argos mothercare ones are really good, pressure one's do tend to move about a bit, especially worrying on the stairs, and the holes for fixed ones are so small, they can be filled in afterwards without any hassel.

I really urge you to get one WITHOUT a bar along the bottom - we have two babydan ones without the bar. However I have friends with gates with the bar across the bottom and I found that the bar means that you had to either step over a whole step or kind of stand on the bar itself. Either way it is pretty dangerous when you are holding a baby going up or down the stairs and trying to negotiate a bar as well. (I know it sounds silly, maybe it is just me, but I really felt it was dangerous).

The only down side with the "no bar" gates is they are a bit more fiddly to fit initially as you have to line up the hinged side and the lock.

I had a pressure gate for the top of the stairs originally, but got rid of it as I felt that it was not secure enough to ensure there was no risk of our son falling.

Thanks for the replys, still looking for a gate, although just one for the bottom of the stairs just now. We used to have with bars at the bottom with our eldest and i agree i wouldn't get one again we always had to step over it.

All the gates we have seen are pressure gates would that be suitable for downstairs or what gates are not pressure ones?

Good luck for the future Kyle. It sound's like your at the same stage as my wife and I. We just bought a babydan at the weekend from Toyrus (babiesru) because our 11 month old as found the art of crawling and at super fast speed!

We opped for top of the stairs only, as the botton is never accessable unless we leave a door open.

    Good luck
    Regards,
    Dave

  • I've always found Kiddicare to be great, cheapest prices, free delivery AND cashback (greasypalm 1.75% - don't know about any others).

Also, "X" deals are quite good too if your basket total reaches enough.

    Hope this helps.

yes i got mine from surestart, you dont have to go to any groups or anything you can get them from the one stop you know where you pay your council tax and advice about benifits, you just need your surestart number,if you havent got one you can sign up,you also get things like electris plug safety, cuboard locks all for pennies
oh the stair gate,it has 2 choices one for £5 or one for £7 there is no difference really and the one i have has no bar on the bottom and attaches easily
appreciate what you have got x

We had the Kiddyguard gate - it is like a horizontal roller blind that can roll flush to the wall when not in use. It certainly wasn't money saving but as we had an unusual shaped landing, it was the only one we could get to fit at the time. We had one for top and bottom of the stairs and they are great.

We bought ours from Blooming Marvellous and used a discount code we had at the time.

I am also miss ultra paranoid - my neighbour only had a gate on the top of the stairs, frightfully her toddler managed to get upstairs when she was distracted - he spent 2 days in Hospital. They were all okay thankfully but it did leave me very paranoid!

    Hi everyone,

My little one of 5 months is already on the move-wow, how the time has flown!

I need some advice please if you can help?

I have already read the previous thread..

To sum up: Although I do not live in a Sure Start area, I do attend a lot of their groups where I live and they were more than happy to do safety check and install 2 safety gates and supply me with £60 worth of equipment-top tip!! Always worth checking in your area.

We have a town house, so lots of stairs! At present I have a gate to baby's room and to the kitchen door as we spend al ot of time there.

I was thinking of getting 2 more gates, but am not sure where to put them i.e on top of stairs? And what type? I was thinking of getting 2 of the pressure type ones, other ones are screwed in type. What do you think and what type have you bought?

I am hoping to order from Boots this weekend to make use of their triple points..

Help would be appreciated and thanks in advance!

    JT x
