  • Just add my tuppenth... retractable ones (roller-blinds) are not really as user-friendly as most think - quite a fiddle to pull across and fix.

If you have narrow areas to fix the gate - choose a fixed one, if you have wider areas, then go for the pressure-mounted one.

I certainly would not use a pressure gate at the top of the stairs, come to think of it or anywhere else.

We had two gates, one from mothercare which was excellent and an other which was dire, but we ended up using that one on the entrance to the kitchen.

Generally speaking all the pressure gates come with fixings to screw them to the wall and i would not consider anything else.

Not used the roller type which i think are more for travelling around but i suspect they have their uses.

I've got both a fixed one and a pressure one.

Always hated the pressure one as it has a step to trip over, kept coming away (we ended up nailing it to the wall!!) and the opening isn't very wide as it's a door within a gate.

We only need one now at the top, just to remind them not to wander downstairs in the night.

No prizes for guessing which we got rid of!!

The wooden one we have is like the argos one in the link above, and opens to flat against the wall, so doesn't take up much space width wise when open.

I just spent a day training the wee one to use the stair, she came down once with a bump but has been very good since.

Argos if you have a regular width for the gate to go in - John Lewis if you have narrow stairs like me! Could be cheaper out there though, but when I was looking I found Argos to be the cheapest generally.
Some are better than others - ones you can open with one hand are a God send, and if you have toddlers make sure they can work the stair gate too!

hi, if you have a surestart programme in your area and im sure we have all got them, then you can buy them for £5 something from them, all you need is you surestart number that they give you when you register with them.if you dont know anything about them then your midwife/health visitor or doctor will know.
    hope this helps
appreciate what you have got x

If you have the time, try the local paper. You have to be the first one to ring up though as they go like hot cakes...
