my yoghurt making isn't going to plan. First attempt I forgot to boil the milk and it did nothing just warm milk in the morning. This morning the whey and curd had separated. I sturred it and put it back on ( have bought lakelands electric yoghurt maker) and it separated even further. So I can make cheese instead me thinks.

I used full fat milk a topped it up with milk from dried milk. I think this should be ok to use according my booklet.
Used pre frozen yeo bio yoghurt which I defrosted in room temp.
pre boiled milk cooled to 50C
must have been left for 7 hours...

and I got curds... my guess was that it was too long in the machine. Though my booklet says you can leave overnight??? one day I'll get this right. Any thoughts please?

:D So the yoghurt-making in the Easiyo, using UHT, milk powder, and bit of yoghurt is going really well. The result tastes much better than the Easiyo sachets, IMO. Today I saw Pharma Nord Bio-Culture capsules at the shop, the kind that don't have to be refrigerated, and couldn't resist! They work out as 21p per capsule, and I'll use one per batch.

If anyone is good with figures, could you tell me roughly how much you pay for the tablespoon of yogurt that you put in your batch? I know that some people freeze yogurt in ice cube trays, even better but we don't have a freezer.

Pretty sure I've made a tactical error although suppose it will be nice for the Sunday evenings when I've forgotten to buy yogurt to use as starter :p

ETA: Just saw that this thread has been merged and this very question answered! Yeo Valley small pot £0.38/16 cubes = 2p per cube

Do you mean dry powder, or did you add water to it? I use dry powder to make mine thicker and that works really well.

Had a go at this using the flask method (cheap, plastic, insulated type from asda. Think I paid £4 for it last year.)

Heated 500ml full cream milk to 185 f, removed from heat. Whisked in 4 tblsp skimmed milk powder.
Let it cool till 110f then quickly whisked in 2 tblsp of plain yogurt. Poured into flask, wrapped in teatowel and left for four hours.
Resulted in lovely, thick creamy yogurt. Taste was fresh and not too tart.
Read online somewhere, to leave it inside the oven with just the light on... thought this seemed daft lol but thats where I left it and the result was perfect. I was also sceptical of it being ready in 4 hours ... again I was (happily) proved wrong.
Click the link to see how it turned out. :j

This thread is 48 pages long, so apologies if this question has already been dealt with, but can you make traditional yogurt (milk & starter) in the EasiYo pot, using the same method as you would when using a sachet (filling it up with hot water etc)?

I think the sachets sold for EasiYo are a tad on the expensive side and would like to try to make it the old fashioned way (without a sachet) but using the nice pot.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the recipes using UHT milk. There was one using sugar. I had a hunt through the thread but with no success.

    Thank you in advance.

Ok, first batch that I made with heated uht milk curdled but I didn't realise I had used a starter yog wihout live cultures.

Second batch was like thick milk, bit like Carnation milk, I had used Probiotic yog from Lidl.

Third attempt last night made with Moo UHT milk, 1 tbs Marvel and 2 tbs Yeo Valley yoghurt.

I poured the milk into the container cold as others have done because it was UHT.

Left overnight ie 10 hours, checked this morning and it was like milk. It looks exactly like it did when I put it in the container!

I came down hoping to find some kind of yoghurt, especially as I had used the Yeo Valley which a lot of people rec.

In a moment of panic :o I added a couple of tbs of marvel, put into a small saucepan and heated slightly, put back into the container and poured boiling water into the outer container again and put the easiyo back into it.

Haven't got a clue if that will do anything or not.

It is costing me more in uht milk than buying a large tub of yogurt at the minute.

    Not happy. :(

Yes, it hasn't been in the fridge at all, I had just bought it earlier in the day so it was just sat on the kitchen top until I used it.

I am having a go now using the mini slow cooker to see if that will work (new batch).

I WILL make some proper yoghurt...................... eventually!
