  • Hi,
I thought I would report in on my first attempt to make a batch of homemade yoghurt using the flask method (1 litre metal flask). I have recently started the Dukan diet so am consuming massive amounts of yoghurt!
I used 1 pint of UHT skimmed milk (which I very gently heated - not sure this step is actually necessary if using UHT so next time I will try not heating it), into which I mixed one tablespoon of Activia natural yoghurt and one tablespoon of skimmed milk powder. I also poured some boiling water into the flask before starting to heat the milk.
When the milk mixture was ready, I emptied the boiling water from the flask and poured in the milk mixture. I then wrapped the flask in a towel and set it beside the radiator (I don't have an airing cupboard). This was at 8pm and I left it overnight till 8am. On opening the flask I could see that the mixture had separated but I just emptied the contents into a tupperware tub, gave it a mix and put it in the fridge.
I have just tested the results and it was quite... tart, let's say! I think it was perhaps left for too long, so next time I will reduce the time. For now, I have added some sweetener and vanilla essence and it is quite tasty and I will certainly eat it. I do usually prefer a thicker yoghurt so next time I will perhaps strain the mixture.
    Hope that helps someone!
  • hi-after plowing thru all these pages for hints and tips on how to make yoghurt using normal milk instead of the sachets in my easiyo maker,i just have a couple of questions-

1.I want to use normal pasturised milk if possible, how long to i have to boil it for to steralise it? do i just bring it up to the boil or does it have to simmer for an amount of time?

2.Can i boil pasturised milk then leave to cool and then add the starter+milk powder into the inner tub and carry on as normal with the boiling water upto the baffle ect

any other tips to make my own yoghurt using pasturised milk in my easiyo?

yes I saw that and have finally succumbed and ordered one! I've tried to make yoghurt before and failed and I think I didn't keep it warm enough so hopefully the easy yo will help. at the reduced price it's no more expensive than getting a flask and using that.

when it arrives I will be re reading this thread for tips!
