After having read this thread more than once, I finally bit the bullet and bought a yogurt maker, a Rosemary Conley one from ebay.
Had a go last night and it seems to have made yogurt BUT it looks a bit like baby sick  I know it sounds awful but its the only way to describe it.. looks sort of almost grainy in texture. It tastes ok and I strained the excess liquid off because I wanted thick Greek style yogurt, and although as I say it tastes ok, the appearance is very offputting.
I used 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt as starter and it was very fresh with long expiry date and some longlife milk, again long long expiry date. prefer not to have to use powdered milk too if possible but would do if it was the only way to get the results that everyone else seems to be getting...
Any ideas what was wrong? When I strained it there was an awful lot of liquid too.. aprox 200mls just yellowy coloured liquid. Is there normally that much if you strain it?
Hi Seekaywun,
I'm only a newbie when it comes to yogging but I have had good results so far and can't make it fast enough! The grainyness can be overcome by stirring it and, as you have done, straining it. If it still looks offputting then you could stir some fruit into it. How about if you stir powdered milk into the mix before it goes into the yog maker? This makes it thicker.
I have strained mine and it does produce a lot of liquid but I used it in baking with good results.
Hope you get on ok with it.Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000

Thanks
I noticed today that it seems to have improved with being in the fridge overnight, much less grainy in appearance than it was before.
It certainly tasted lovely :T in fact I can't wait to get the next batch cracking, this will save me a fortune :j
What kind of things can you use the left over liquid in? It did seem a bit of a waste to pour it down the sink.. I did try tasting itbut it was kind of gross on its own :rotfl:
I love this site! :j0 -

I used it in some soda bread instead of buttermilk but you could put it in anything I suppose while baking to replace milk or even water. Stir into soups, I might try it in porridge but I'm definitely not chucking it down the sink if it has nutrition value. The Greek yogurt is lovely isn't it when its been strained.
I love my easiyo it will save me a fortune as we eat no end of the stuff!Save £12k in 2012 no.49 £10,250/£12,000

Hi
Yes Greek yogurt is absolutely gorgeous, it reminds me of being on holiday in the Greek Islands. Now I can't get enough its so yummy
thats a great idea using it in baking. I must give it a bash. I knew you must be able to do something with it, and this is certainly the place to ask :T
Interested... if you do use it in porridge let me know how it goes... I often make porridge but am on a boiled egg and toast soldiers phase right now! If it makes yummy porridge too that would be fab, and so healthy too :TI love this site! :j0 -
Hi all, still waiting for replacement lid from Easiyo and getting impatient to get yogging! So bought a wide mouthed flask at the car boot this morning and dispatched OH to get starter lol.
Having read thru' the whole of the thread Im beginning to get a bit
As I will be using UHT milk - do I need to warm it up first if using a flask? If so, how long should I give it in the microwave? I don't have a thermometer.
Advice appreciatedAMAZON SELLERS CLUB MEMBER 0082 :hello:0 -
Oh, and how long do I have to leave it in the flask for?AMAZON SELLERS CLUB MEMBER 0082 :hello:0

Cat64, when using UHT milk there is no need to heat it first. I always put a couple of tablespoons of milk powder in too, to help thicken it up and sometimes a little sugar. I use the easiyo flask, but would imagine that using any flask is the same - I leave mine between 6 and 8 hours. When it is made I usually refridgerate it and then stir with a whisk before using.0

Thanks organic wanabe, just wondering tho' - the easiyo has boiling water in so perhaps that would bring the temp. of the milk up whereas a normal flask (like mine) wouldn't warm up stuff that isn't warm already (if that makes sense)?AMAZON SELLERS CLUB MEMBER 0082 :hello:0

Of course, I wan't thinking straight! Hope someone comes along soon who uses the microwave for heating the UHT - though I think it would be pretty difficult getting it exactly to the right temperature without a thermometer as each microwave will have a certain degree of variation. Good luck.0
