Disasters recovered (how I did it - OR - I neep help!)

Ok, we've all done it. tried something new (or even an old favourite) and it was a disaster. In fact we have a terrific fun thread on disasters here - Recipes NOT to be repeated!!

On a similar note you may enjoy these too:
But I was wondering how many of you are finding ways to rescue the situation rather than having to bite the bullet and eat something awful or even  throw it in the bin.

As an example - I always make a vegetable soup out of those vegetables in the fridge that I don't think that I might use up (or may go sad) before my next veg box is delivered. Most come out OK - you know - just throw them at the pot and see how they come out...

..every now and then I get a result that is pretty dire.

So what I do with failed veg soups is to whizz them up thoroughly and freeze them in portions.

It's these that I then use as part of my gravy base for other stews and casseroles. First they're diluted by the other base liquid (if needed) and the taste is disguised by stock or by stock cubes. You finish up with a nice thick gravy AND for those of you with fussy eaters - you can hide any number of veggies in just about anything :)

So - what's your disaster and what did you adapt it into?

Thanks squeaky - now I know what to do with that batch of nondescript soup in the feezer ;)

If I make a chicken casserole that is a bit bland then I tend to mix it in with a chicken curry ;)

    Ok... here's the thing... :)

If you had a disaster and had to bin it - could you please join one of the other threads listed in the first post.

I'd like to keep this thread specifically for rescues.

We all get to be good and creative about using left overs as time goes by - and the board has plenty of tips on those...

..but here I'd like to know of rescues - how you saved having to throw the result of a disaster away.

    Thanks :)

Edit: If you've got a current "disaster in progress" - post it here - somebody may be able to help you to rescue it :)

    hi,

I wanted to maake some bean burgers at the weekend and used a tin of chilli beans. Even after adding flour and stuff the mixture was too sloppy. Instead of chucking it away we made some guacamole and salsa ans had it as taco filling. Lovely it was too!
  • Hello!

I made a crumble this evening with a mango that had seen better days and 2 apples that needed using up. I had a bright idea to put some ginger in it, however I've put waaayyyyy too much ginger in it. Any ideas to fix this? Don't really want to bin it...

    Thanks

    Caroline

Is the ginger in the crumble or in the fruit bit?

I'd add more fruit - either a couple more apples, a banana (maybe mashed to nothing if you don't fancy the consistency of chunks) or even some tinned fruit mixed well in.
If you serve the crumble with natural yoghurt, creme fraiche, custard or ice cream that will dilute the ginger flavour anyway...

natural yoghurt takes out heat from curries - so try a tablespoon of that. if you can mix it in without disturbing crumble!
  • Sorry to bump this! I hadn't actually tried it before I made my plea to you all but it did smell a bit funny in the oven, however was delish!

If you're ever making a crumble with a mango past its best and 2 wrinkly apples, add about 2 inches of fresh ginger root and a little sugar...
