Hello,
Just thought I would drop by with my opinion on Tax Credits. I know the system isn't perfect, but what you have got to remeber is that it is a benefit and it has financially helped millions in this country. I constantly hear on the tv & read in the newspapers etc that billions of pounds have been overpaid and that customers are not at fault and it is putting familys in hardship. At the end of the day, Tax Credits is sourced through public funds (taxpayers money), so if you have been overpaid then it should be paid back. Regardless of fault.
Also, I always get the impression people think that HMRC is a business, its not. All the money they are recovering isn't going in their "pockets", it goes straight back out to other claimants.
Finally, I have read alot of reply's that state they are being forced to pay X amount a month and HMRC have put them into hardship through repaying overpayments. If that is the case I sugest you phone the Debt Management and Banking team to request an Income & Expenditure form, once completed it establish's how much you can afford to repay, and in some cases where you have a negative income, they may suspend recovery.
Regards, Hotblu
Ps, I honestly haven't posted this to start arguments, it is just my opinion. If you have any comments/opinions I would like to hear them.0 -

I agree with you there. I am seemingly due them just over £12K, which is funny considering I never had that much off them in total.
My partner earned £4K in 1 yr as I was on full time. They have him down as earning £15K and they want it back... They have had all out p60's etc.
I am now a single parent with 2 kids surviving on Incapacity of £81pw.. They said I would get ctc but I aint had either WTC or CTC in last 4 yrs..
Just lost as to what to do & where to start. :wall: :think:0 -

They have certainly not been kind to me. I admit if i am wrong then fair enough. But i haven't had any of the £7k written off to help me, or reduced payments or suspended. I only work part-time and have had to borrow to get them off my back. It feels like they treat everyone differently. Writing off some for some and making others sufferConverted comper to MSE. Thank you for all your answers!0 -
they are doing my head in at the minute as well. We've been overpaid and received a letter to tell us they will collect it by reducing future payments but didnt say which payments or what they will be reduced to. Thanks thats helpful. I phoned and was advised to ring the "overpayment number" which I didnt round to because ......
On the phone I also tried to inform them of a change to our childcare costs (they have gone down) but they couldnt update the system because the system thinks I am not working at all because my employer has changed due to a takeover and the PAYE ref for my employer has changed. Til I get them the new one they will continue to pay us too much. I am having diffs getting the PAYE ref because our payslips aren't paper, they are online and I can't get into the system, and there is no UK HR representative. So until it all gets sorted they will contine paying us, our chikdcare costs have reduced so I assume they are overpaying still and then will need to reclaim this overpayment as well as the stuff they already say they have overpaid us (which I dint understand anyway. Mabe its cos they think I have stopped work even though I havent.........)
Anyway, I am about to go on maternity leave, my income will drop massively and there will be a new baby so its all change again and I have no idea what to expect, it is all so complicated.

I've just received my award today. Apparently I've been overpaid by a really small amount but as they don't want to cause hardship (we get £7 pm) they will continue to pay our award but warn us that the amount we owe them will increase! Come again?
like your death philosophy! thats rock n roll!:rotfl:0 -
Help! Just had a call this morning from local hm rev & customs office asking me to pay back over £1700. This is how it started
end 05:
Claimed working & child tax creds
Recieved award notice and large amounts of backdated money (since daughters birth) paid into account followed by weekly amounts
a couple of months later payments stopped and we recived a letter saying we owed them over £1700
Rang to find out why and was told that as we havent signed and returned the declaration we shouldnt have been paid the money and therefore must return it
However we hadnt recived any other paperwork and therefore couldnt have signed and returned it so why had they paid us the money?
Agreed we were right and that we had been entitled to the amounts so were told that we didnt have to pay any amounts back and the matter was resolved (march 06)
so now why are they chasing us for money 18 months later? we cant afford to pay anything back even in tiny instalments. plus we reciewved our award for this year today and it doesnt mention anything on it, just like last year.
now i have to dispute itr again and dont have any papertwork from that long ago, nor any idea of the exact dates phone conversations took place, letters written/recieved etc. am i right in thnking that this is an administration mistake from their side, not waiting for a signature before paying us? any payments would cripple us we dont even have a single penny left at trhe end of the week and often have to 'borrow' milk or toilet roll just to get by, our toddler and newborn have to share our bed we are that poor at the moment!
any advice would be really gladly recieved.0
