Selling a laptop - nightmare!

Had problems recently sellingmy laptop on Ebay - the people heregave me good advice and I sent it off properly.

Now the buyer has come back to me - says it doesn't work. I said I was going to send him the warranty (still valid), now he has come back saying he took it to service and he's been told it would cost £850 to repair. He now wants to send it back to me, have a full refund and be refunded for the cost of the service (£80 or something).

Laptop works, no question. All I did to it before I sent it off was delete my user account and create a new admin account, which I e-mailed the details to (username and password) to the buyer.

Any ideas of what to do? My plan is just to send him the warranty and tell him to send the laptop to the company to be looked at.

are you a private or business seller?
as for the service costs,he can whistle for those either way!

what faults is he telling you are present, and how long since auction end?
(ps i assume you noted serial numbers?)

£850 quid is a ridlicious amount of money to fix a laptop I can only assume they went to rip off world for a quote.

Either way that was there choice to do that and pay for one not yours so you don't ow them anything for that.

When did you sell it and how did they pay?

I cant see why you kept hold of the warranty information in the first place

Just send the warranty info off to him recorded and think no more of it. I can't see why you would have to reimburse him anything.

What does he say is wrong with it that its going to cost £850 to repair? Why would he have to pay anything if its under warranty? Why did he take it to 'service' if its under warranty?

Explain it was working when you posted it, and forward him on the warranty details.

The buyer has now escalated a paypal claim, and I'm now in a negative balance with Paypal.

He claims the warranty is not valid anymore, but the company i got it from provide a 1 year return to base. I have said I will send him details in the post and it is up to him to sort this out.

Worrying now what Paypal will do...

Whatever you send him at least make sure its at least recorded delivery so you can prove to paypal you sent it him.

Whats the item number just out of curiosity?

Filled out info on Paypal and escalated it to a claim. Lets see what happens...
  • I would e-mail him and say that you will offer him a refund for the laptop. However as for the refund for the service, he should have contacted you before having it done and therefor you will not pay for it. When you get the laptop, get it fixed and sell it again.

my only concern here is whats now wrong with the laptop.
not good for the seller to have had a fully working item and now refunding for a broken machine

Cant see anything out of the ordinary there.

Only thing that I would question is its been a month since hes brought it granted it was Christmas time but it must of been working surely when he got it otherwise he would of complained a lot sooner.

Let us know how it goes.
