Post Office Reg Mail - Undelivered

Options
In August I forwarded my documents to my mobile phone provider to get my £60 cashback via Recorded Delivery, as I have done many times before.

However, I then find that the letter hasn't been delivered and I have lost £60.

I complained to RM, who said they'd written to the address where the letter was sent and have rec'd no reply & therefore have to assume the letter was delivered?! Then in the next paragraph state that they can only trace the letter if it was delivered and they cannot trace it!?

I wrote to them stating that they obviously haven't delivered it as they can't trace it & that due to this I have suffered a personal loss of £60 & I expect compensation.

Well yesterday I got another letter from RM with my compensation.............. of 12 1st class stamps!!! I'm so annoyed - I lose £60 despite taking the precaution of sending Recorded Delivery & they give me 12 stamps!!!

Any idea on where I go from here would be much appreciated.
Thanks

You can claim £34 back for a lost item sent 1st, 2nd or Recorded. Anything worth over £34 is meant to be sent Special Delivery as this gives up to £500 compensation.

You can't blame the Royal Mail for not giving you more compensation if you did not sent it by the correct method.

I think you will struggle to get anything out of them. Recorded Delivery compensation is not available in the following circumstances:
    • Current British and foreign bank notes and coins
    • Uncrossed postal orders
    • Uncrossed cheques and dividend warrants payable to the bearer
    • Any postage, revenue, National Insurance or savings stamps valid for use
    • Credit notes, coupons, vouchers, gift tokens, tickets or anything that can be exchanged for money, goods or services
    • Bearer securities, including share warrants, bonds or relative coupons and scrips or subscription certificates
    • Jewellery, precious stones and metals
    Gone ... or have I?

Oh, sorry I mis-read the first post. I thought the OP was sending a mobile phone off to one of those companies which give you money for them.

As it was a bill sent to get cashback you can't get £34 for sending it recorded delivery.
  • I have looked at various threads regarding undelivered recorded delivery mail - and have attached my post to this thread as it is one of the latest threads.

Seems like I am one of many who send recorded delivery letters to a large company and there is no confirmation of delivery on track and trace.

I have been trying to get a reply from Avis Car-Hire since last October. I have sent 3 recorded delivery letters - the first one was signed for - but as expected they did not respond.
Two more letters sent in November were never signed for. I expect Avis have received them - but they have chosen to ignore me (see my thread about car hire and tyres).

I have attempted to resolve this with Royal Mail but their customer services are hopeless (or overworked due to too many complaints about undelivered mail). So far, I have not had an explanation from Royal Mail.

I spoke to royal mail on the telephone and they advised I send the letter SPECIAL DELIVERY which will guarantee a signature on track and trace. I suggested that they were implying that recorded delivery was ineffective, and were persuading the public to use special delivery which is about £5.75, thus increasing their profits.
I pointed out that Royal Mail shouldn't sell a 'recorded delivery' service if it doesn't guarantee a signature.

So, I wonder why they continue to offer this service if they can't guarantee a signature????

Anyone else had problems with recorded delivery????

Recorded delivery is just 1st class with a signature - there is no 'track and trace' service on it, just a recorded signature when delivered (in theory). If the value of the item is high, or even just worth more than the cost of postage, special delivery is a much safer option. If you have a look across the boards you will find people who prefer their postie to post RD items if they aren't there, people who don't and those who work for businesses where all items are signed for on a manifest rather than individually. There isn't a system that works for everyone unfortunately, but I can see why you are frustrated by this. Do you not have copies of the documents you sent off? Would the mobile phone company accept these? Presumably you have proof of postage, so you might be in with a shot?

I'd be thankful that you got 12 1st class stamps....as I'm sure I heard recently that compensation would be going down to 6 1st class stamps at some point.

Have you thought that it might be the mobile phone provider doing something dodgy?

It's a well known fact that they make their money by hoping (and knowing) that many customers can't be bothered to send their documents to get their cashback, so end up paying more than they ought to. Perhaps they refused delivery?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

i too have experienced problems with royal mail and recorded delivery items. One was the b0g off letter (CCA request) which was never signed for on delivery.. i only knew they'd got it wheni received a letter back acknowledging my letter, and more recently a letter sent recorded delivery on friday to DVLA in thier stamped addressed envelops was delivered today but the track says 'come back later' i knew it was delivered as my boyfriend rang the lady direct to see if she had recived it. Why cant the royal mail do their job?? we pay the extra for a signature on delivery yet dont get the signature, SOOOO FRUSTRATING!!!!!

SPANIEL36...because signatures are captured on delivery cards, taken back to the relevant delivery offices by the posties, then forwarded to a centralised place, (judgeing from your location you will be well aware where that is lol), the are all then scanned, these images come up on a screen and data keyers then have to type the 13 digit codes for every single item and that then gets loaded up to the internet....THAT is the reason you dont get to see the signature 10 minutes after its been signed for.

I think this is much more likely. The CPW/E2save brigade rarely sign for the recorded delivery items and you'll see this mentioned over and over again on the mobile phone board. The very last few claims I submitted to them went special delivery and were signed for.
