Air Source Heat Pumps

Hi, depends on your lifestyle, however, if you have a well insulated house, then using the programmable rom stat is IMO the best way to control it, I.e. setting the programmer to all day, and setting the room stat for different temperatures at different times of the day, for example... 10.30 pm set back to 16 for night time, the unit should not run, at 7.00 am set to 20. If your out all day set to 16. If your in set to 19 or 20. At 5.00pm set to 21. Obviously the heat pump cannot do domestic hot water and heating at the same time, so set hot water either for 6.00am for an hour, or 4.00 pm for an hour again depending on your lifestyle.
Hope this helps

OK Thanks, that doesn't sound to bad, I put the thermostat down to 19 last night and just done the same now, although I did notice earlier it wouldn't go down from 220 -
Did they fit a digital programmable room stat? There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

You should be able to modify the display of your wireless thermostat to show target temp and current temp which I find useful.
Just to confirm ours is set to always be on but a different temp at night time, typically means the ASHP does nothing overnight as house does not normally drop to 17c. Only the hotwater is timed twice daily.

The Thermostat is a Danfoss Randall RET B-RF Wireless Room Thermostat
http://www.plumbnation.co.uk/site/danfoss-randall-ret-b-rf-wireless-room-thermostat-with-rx-1-radio-frequency-receiver-087n727600/ with the RX 1 fitted in airing cupboard. The DanfossFP715 SI Heating Programmer is next to it
I put a thermometer next to the thermostat and it was saying 20 degrees C this morning without the heating coming on (its stayed that temperature over night) so that proves the thermostat isn't faulty.0 -
Hi merlinonline, the room stat you have is not programmable,
this one is,

The TP5000 Si is an easy to install-and-use 5/2 day programmable room thermostat which offers up to six time and temperature changes each day with different programmes for weekdays and weekends. There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!

Baz@rr ask the landlord to have a seperate meter installed between the fuse board and the ASHP so it measures only what the heat pump uses. That way you can know exactly what you're using for ovens etc and exactly what the heat pump is using. Meters can be had for £40 on ebay so it's not going to kill him to have it done....

That's not a bad idea at all - I'll see what he says. I spoke to the engineer today who is coming out tomorrow and he was a bit gobsmacked about it coming on despite being set to off, and confirmed that something must be far wrong on that front, so hopefully once that's fixed we'll see the costs plummet.

Unfortunately its a Housing Association property so no say in what was installed. Last night left it at 16 degrees, in the morning the thermometer was reading 19 degrees so the house is holding the heat which is good.
I'm keeping a daily tab on electric meter (also making sure the outside day and night temps are recorded). The meter isn't the easiest to read as its a digital one line display that flicks through three sets of numbers. As far as I'm aware one is meant to be normal use, the other maybe econ 7 and the third not sure.
Once I get that sorted will see how much we are using (unfortunately didn't do this before it was installed so we had a comparison).0 -

I'm just turning it down to 16c, and as I said it was 19c in the hallway in the morning before it was switched on.0 -

Just nosy I guess
Seriously I just like to know of other people in the highlands with this sort of gear installed and how it's working for them. Our place is a tad further north than FW right up on the top coast near Bettyhill.
We love FW, we tried to buy a place near there a lot of years ago, the old post office in Corran, £20k if I remember right, but the estate agent had someone in mind and made it very hard to view etc so we ended up further north....
That was around the time they were filming "Braveheart" in Glen Nevis.
In my "yoof", late 80's, me and "she who must be obeyed" jumped in the car, set off from Leeds, had a donner in FW, and drove home again. LOL, ~800 mile round trip for a donner. Must have been mental but that little take away tucked down off the main street near the Co Op did a lovely donner before they sold upThey're not half as nice now
