Reverse Parking - moneysaving? even for me?

My new car at the moment parks itself - how cool is that!!! It's a bit of a circus act when I have people in the car 'look - no hands' and all that! Much fun.
Not "cool" at all, downright dangerous and foolhardy if you ask me. You should be in complete control of your vehicle at all times.0 -
As to reversing using mirrors only, I disagree, turning your head to look over your shoulder is by far the safest method - understood that older people are not as agile to be able to do this - If you turn your head your eyes can see 180° behind you. Looking in mirrors you can only see 10° - 30° at any one time.
I agree with you in principle and you have better vision obviously, but there are situations when, for example the car is loaded with stuff and you cannot see out, or during damp weather when the best of cars can steam up at the back, plus reversing in on the blind side especially with the latest fashion accesory cars that seem to have arrow slits for windows (much worse at the rear quarter and the painfull excuse for rear hatch windows on some cars), you can see more out of good properly adjusted mirrors.(sit in a 3 door new shape astra and try a blind side reverse without using mirrors, and tell me where the posts are around you)
I think its a good idea for those, (and there are a lot of them) who find reverse parking difficult to perfect their manouevering under controlled conditions, then when they are presented with a difficult reverse, it becomes easy and so much less stressful, especially to me when i'm not waiting for 10 minutes pulling my hair while someone who can't be bothered to learn the basics of manouevering performs a 19 point shunt and still can't get out of a bay they should have reversed into anyway.

Fair point. I was assuming it was parked in the same direction as you. If the gap you are reverse parking into is significantly more than one car length, then you - literally - have more room for manoeuver.
Reverse parking simply makes use of the extra manoeuverability of rear wheel steering, like fork lift trucks. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I cant beleive people are asking how to reverse park, you shouldn't have passed your test if your not competent at reversing. And I also thought it was illegal to reverse into a main road? Maybe my dad just used to tell me that so I had no choice but to reverse into our drive. As for moneysaving, cant really save that much to make it worthwhile.
I can reverse park. Reverse parking is reversing into a space where the cars are parked bumper to bumper. the question was is it more economical to reverse into a side by side parking space, like at supermarkets.
I can also reverse into a side by side parking space (which is not a requirement to pass your test, look it up). However, I find it time consuming and awkward to reverse into a side by side space, and so I choose not to do it. Plus I then have to try and get a buggy out of a boot and round the the front of teh car without hitting anything. or take it out first.
For me I save fuel by driving in. Simple.
However... driving OH car, which is a smaller and shorter car than mine, I can reverse in easily. And would be more likely to do so.0 -
In reverse, a car is more manoeuvarable. Against that, you have to turn your head to see where you're going, and the brain can find it hard to cope with doing everything backwards.
I'm afraid I do go forwards into my drive and reverse out when I should do it the other way round.0 -
I just cannot park going forwards into a space, (except to get on the driveway at home). I always reverse into a space."I'm not from around here, I have my own customs"
For confirmation: No, I'm not a 40 year old woman, I'm a 26 year old bloke!0 -
I reverse into a space as when i drive out find its easier for me to see what pedestrians/cars are aboutNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20
