Reverse Parking - moneysaving? even for me?

  • I would say the fuel savings are not even calculable, but if you reverse into space, its almost impossible to be blocked in.

Whereas if you drive in, and get close parkers beside you, you have no swing movement to get your car out.

The only downside to reverse parking is trying to get a supermarket trolley near to the boot.

Best way to learn it is to use a very quiet car park, and practise reverse manoeuvers using mirrors only until you get it right.
(borrow a few cones, and set them up to simulate cars around you, you'll be surprised how quickly it comes together).

Very good point about the security issue that poster.

why would you not look where you're going???

you are looking where you are going in the mirrors.

also another note about reversing, if you reverse out of your drive on to a main road then this is illegal if you are able to reverse into the drive in the first place.and it makes it a hell of a lot easier to go into the drive in reverse when its quiet and drive out when its busy.

We were always taught in the army that the more difficult a space was to get in or out was all the more reason to reverse in in case you had to get out quickly.

    Old habits die hard.

you can't see your blind spots.

i was taught to reverse park when i passed my test. i NEVER park forwards, and I never use just mirrors to do it.

If you are shopping and there is no need to get to the boot then reversing into a space is ok. If, on the other hand you had done a weekly shop and whilst you were in the supermarket somebody parked really close, you would then either have to squeeze the trolley through the gap and risk bashing someones car, or stuggle with the bags leaving the trolley at the front of your car. Or move your car to a space where you can get at the boot properly. Just drive in, reverse out, just easier all round really.

The big problem with reverse parking in disabled bays in supermarket car parks is that they all have a post at the back that stops you opening the boot.

I'm not one of those people that's desperate to park as close to the supermarket door as possible, regardless!

i don't think anyone's parked next to me for 6 months or more!! :rotfl:

Reverse parking into a space on the roadside, angle your nearside mirror down so you can see your back wheel. This way you can precisely park right to the curb, no scuffing, no rolling onto the curb. Also, look out behind with your eyes, don't just rely on mirrors

I wish that more people realised how dangerous it is to reverse onto a main road, I see loads of idiots doing it everyday.

Supermarket is different you need access to the boot to put the bags in and on a car park people should in theory be going slow and looking for people starting to pull out but again you see people at 60mph down a car park.

i have driven vans from the day i passed my test, try looking at the blind spot of a van, very hard when you can only see metal, ive always found it easier to reverse with just the mirrors, rather than looking over my shoulder.i guess this is because ive had to do this as ive always been used to vans.
