I tried the Asda 'Smart Price' baked beans today (17p) and I would say in my opinion they are the best I've tried so far.Haven't tried them before as They are not my local supermarket.
  • I'm honestly not a baked beans snob - in years past I did try quite a few value varieties as well as the bigger brands, some were ok but none to me were outstanding ( this was a few years ago though maybe some have improved ). I would probably still use some of the better value beans as an ingredient but for stand alone eatin' beans it has to be Branstons for me :)

Do you think if I wrote to Branston and told them how popular their beans are they would send me loads of free tins? ;)

Just trying to get even healthier, and did an online shop for the heavy stuff. It has only just occurred to me,is it worth getting the "healthy choice" beans,or is the salt difference negligable.

I'm sure the Tesco Light ones (or whatever they are called) have no salt or sugar. I get these and to be honest prefer the taste now. I found some Heinz ones in the cupboard and used them and found them too sweet.

Honestly? Unless you've got a medical condition where your doctor has said you need to avoid salt, I wouldn't worry about it. There has been some disagreement in the medical community regarding the link between salt and blood pressure. It sounds like you're generally pretty healthy - OS means cooking more from scratch, and I doubt you're eating at KFC every day, etc - so if you like the taste, I'd go for the cheap beans every time!

Tesco Value Baked Beans _________Salt per ½ tin 1.3g
Tesco Healthy Living Baked Beans __Salt per ½ tin 0.7g
Heinz Reduced Sugar & Salt ________Salt per ½ tin 1.1g

The Tesco Value beans ingredients are: Water, Haricot Beans (40%), Tomato Puree (14%), Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Onion Powder, Paprika, Flavouring.
So the main ingredient is water! And they only contain 54% beans & tomatoes.

Healthy Living Beans ingredients are: Haricot Beans (49%), Water, Tomato Puree (20%), Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Onion Powder, Paprika, Sweetener (Saccharin), Flavouring.
They contain 69% beans & tomatoes.

Heinz Reduced Sugar & Salt ingredients: Beans (51%), Tomatoes (33%), water, sugar, modified corn flour, salt, spirit vinegar, spice extracts, herb extract
They contain 84% Beans & Tomatoes

I always buy the healthy Living ones (for DS) and the Heinz reduced sugar & salt ones for me (I prefer the taste of the Heinz ones) as DS is only 19months and shouldn’t be having more than 2g salt a day.

I would say if its just for yourself and you dont mind the taste of the value ones then get them, but if its for kids get the Tesco Healthy Living ones.

If you are concerned about loss of flavour, then just add a drop or two of Lea & perrins :)
  • All the value lines in the main supermarkets seem to have doubledin price. Can anyone recommend a new cheap sorce of things like baked beans? Are Aldi ones okay? Are they cheap? (My kids won't eat french ones, but love the sstandard supermarket value ones.) Thanks in advance
