Yum! I never remember this when I'm doing baked beans!

I only do it as OH tried Branston beans and was really upset that they didn't taste of Branston Pickle - I figured a shake of worcester and some spices would pacify him ;) x
  • Guilty confession time...although I will eat them heated up, I like my baked beans best served cold...with a good dollop of curry powder and and handful of sultanas...for this I always use Value/Basic/Betterbuy baked beans.

I like baked beans in the bottom of my cottage pie - and again I use the value type baked beans for this.

But for beans on toast, it's Branstons all the way (but only ever bought on offer :D)

Have you tried making your own? Maybe not for everyday, but I made some for Bonfire Night and they went down so well, I made another batch for New Year's eve.

    I use this recipe.

  • Actually, I was in Waitrose the other day and picked up those free recepie cards and there was one for homemade baked beans, I'll find it and then post it, that one said that you could try it with other beans too

  • Hi carolinosourus :) I picked up that card too (one of the reasons I go to Waitrose once a month is for the recipe cards :D It's on my route home so it's not a problem!)

All the Waitrose recipes past and present can be found on their website, here is a link to this month's homemade baked beans recipe: http://www.waitrose.com/recipe/Homemade_Baked_Beans_on_Wholegrain_Toast.aspx

(I have got the right one, haven't I? My recipe card is 15 miles away at the mo so I can't check!)

  • Branstons beans for me too. I used to be a Heinz girl but the last year or so they have been going steadily downhill - rock hard beans and very few of 'em drowning in far too much watery sauce. I don't mind Co op's own brand either.

I do make my own " baked beans " now sometimes. I picked up that Waitrose card too but didn't really like the look of the result, I prefer my own recipe :)

  • I love Branston Beans too, but the other day I was in Sainsburys and found Heinz beanz with hidden veg and got some to try. They were absolutely lovely - the sauce has blended veg in but it tastes just like regular bean sauce, except much thicker and tastier. The Kids ate them and loved them and the best bit was that half a can counts as 2 veg servings, which is great for my kids as they HATE veg with a passion.
