you could always try not exceeding the speed limit!!!

Perhaps we should call them 'traffic safety alerts' instead?

Or how about 'Greed Camera Alerts' :p

    I've been Money Tipped!
I'm after buying my hubby a satnav as he is changing his job and will be travelling a bit and he's not the best at directions (bless him).
Which is the best of the cheapies, not the cheapest, but the best at the lower end. Do they update or do you need to pay for updates??
It doesn't have to make cups of tea etc. and will only be used for the UK.

    Any advice welcome,

    Lynsey

My house (and the street it is on) is over 100 years old, yet does not appear in most Sat Nav devices. If you put my postcode in, it either comes up with the street opposite (which has a different name) or says "can't locate address", "postcode incorrect", etc

I regularly get calls from delivery drivers & workmen, asking for directions, as they can't find me using their new & expensive piece of lovely 'hi-tech' equipment. They always ask "is your house a new build?".
    Erm, not quite...

In the old days, when they used to use a tiny, cheap (£4.99) black & white A-Z book, they found me everytime, with no problems.

    Go figure! :/

Moya, as you can see Id mentioned this scam further up the thread. I only found out by entering the name of the sat nav they are selling in a google search to see if there were any reviews on it - thats where a forum came up about it.

Good luck. Ive tried complaints through ebay and paypal before(for a duff motor scooter) and despite all the assurances on the site, they didnt want to know :(You may be better off finding that forum and then contacting your trading standards office - if they can see there are lots of people with the same complaint they should take action. I involved them and I got a full refund for the scooter.

Lynsey check out my posting further up the thread - Ive spent ages looking at them and I think the Garmin Nuvi 200W is the best for me for day to day use. Ive chosen the wide screen as I think that will be easier to glance at than a lot of the standard size ones. Id never heard of Garmin before ! but over the weeks Ive found that reviews rate them higher than TomTom (in fact I did a google search and Martin Lewis had a Garmin!) There is also a chap who reviews electronic equipment (Ive put the link above) and he has the Garmin 200 and actually has a video on there showing you how to set it up and also does question and answers with any probs on it - which I also thought may be handy when we first start using one.
  • The Navigo SATNAV looks like a great price, but for now you may be stuck with the maps supplied. The link on the Ebuyer web advert to the updated software site now says 'Error the link you clicked on is not available' and 'The download limit has been reached for this file' So don't expect to get an update of the maps as advertised.
just visited the ebuyer site and the link to the updated maps appears to be working again.Downloaded to my desktop ready for when my sat nav arrives.

Edit:further research leads me to believe that the link on the ebuyer site just gives you an updated operating system(from Turbodog 4 to Turbodog 5) and does NOT update the maps. The folder size is 24.2 MB whereas new maps would be about 150MB.If this is the case then Ebuyer are being very misleading.Perhaps an "expert" could confirm this for the benefit of others.I think i will cancel my order if the mapping cannot be updated.

So back to the main point of this topic,
    Well priced SatNavs

If you are lucky enough to do Martins Car insurance system and get a cheapest quote from Tesco's they are currently offering a £100 voucher for any Navman SatNav from tesco direct. The cheapest of these being on offer at the moment at £129.99, hence use the voucher which comes within around 10 days of taking out the policy and you've got a very good all round Satnav for less that £30
  • Speed and red light cameras updated daily and unlimited downloads, for most SatNavs, 10 Euros/ year. http://www.scdb.info/en/

Was given a TomTom One v3 Europe for Xmas. Expensive and not impressed. Out of the box, there was no facility for waypoints, making it IMO useless, but this can be corrected with a simple file from: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com//modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=59534

TT is also very slow to recalculate if you take a wrong turn. I cannot understand why "everyone says TT are the best".

A couple of my friends have Navman and they recalculate almost instantly.
Microdirect.co.uk have the Navman N40i with European maps for £100.

The MyGuide 3100 with Euro maps is £112 on ebuyer and according to the many posts on their forum, is a very good unit and easy to hack.

I posted this a while ago. I've checked today and it is still possible to get one for the price mentioned above. Click the link.

I can confirm that this deal works and there are no catches. Two relatives and a friend did this and they have each received a Navman F10.They all cancelled their DD on receipt of the satnav, wrote axa sunlife a short letter stating they had decided to cancel the policy and couple of weeks later received a reply stating their policy was now cancelled and they would not receive a refund of the £6.00 premiums already paid.So result they all have a satnav value about £100 for one £6 premium.
It`s not the best satnav out there but it does the job and for £6 it`s an absolute bargain.
