  • Things I can't compromise on:

Cheese - It must be good strong tasting mature stuff! I just eat less of it now rather than compromise on quality (better for my waistline and my purse! :p )

Eggs - Must be free range :A

Tea - I only buy PG Tips or M&S Extra Strong Tea. I had an emergency situation last week where I was forced to buy Spar own brand tea bags...bleugh...they were vile!

Bin Bags - I HATE it when the bag spilts  But I have found Baco Bin Bags, which are really thick, in Home Bargains for 99p.

Bread - I rarely buy sliced white but when I do it simply has to be warbutons.

Shower Gel - I adore the champneys shower gel. Its about £4 a tube but I can justify that spend because you only need to use a small amount and it lasts so much longer than any other brand I've tried.

Toothpaste - All my life I have only used Aquafresh as it has just the right amount of mintyness for me. The stronger ones cause a burning sensation in my mouth  So that is one thing I will never change brands on.

I like soft loo roll but it doesn't have to be a particular brand. If Velvet, Andrex or Charmin are on offer I snap them up though ;)

I used to only buy Sure or Dove deodourants but got a Mitchum one last week from Home Bargains (only 99p!) And its been working very well so far:rotfl:
  • I buy Mr T's handmade Red Leicester. It's not too strong to eat on its own but it's got enough flavour to cook with. It also seems to last longer than the vacuum packed ones, which seem rather wet.

I also buy British meat and organic dairy produce. I try to buy British veg. Everything else is under review.

For me it's just got to be good coffee - but not too strong/bitter!

I start the day with a cup of Kenco Smooth instant and then for the remainder of the day it's Kenco Decaff. However, round about lunch-time, I get my small cafetiere out and make myself a cup of decent ground coffee. Helps to stop me from dozing off after lunch :o. (I work from home.)

OH likes good tea-bags - but I make him buy them for himself as I don't drink tea at all.

I also enjoy a really good marmalade - but not enough to spend outrageous money for a jar EVERY week. I normally get the SmartPrice one for 27p - OK, so it's not the fantabulous tasting stuff, BUT for 27p it's quite passable. On holiday (in Scotland) and at Christmas I do treat myself to the Frank Cooper's Oxford (or Dundee) Marmalade or one of those 'Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon' ones that you get in souvenir shops.
  • I will not compromise on bread. The cheap stuff is horrendously bad for you, so I tend to buy wholegrain seeded pitta breads. And actually, the cost isn't all that bad; The Weight Watcher's ones are on offer in Tesco right now, 47p for a pack! Other bread I buy is organic rye bread (reasonably cheap anyway), or a pack of Volkenbrot which is only 79p in my local Tesco for 10 slices. Oh, one other thing.. mushy peas. Tesco Value ones are like pea soup. Harry Ramsden's rule.

Otherwise, I couldn't give a damn about brands. Cheaper the better.

Just out of interest, why? I tend to buy the cheapest bread there is, reduced if possible but value otherwise. I've always assumed it was better to buy Value, which seems to be made mainly of cardboard, then the "Keep for seven years" stuff which has loads of fungicides and unicorns added to it to make it keep?

With me and my girlfriend, we literally compromise on anything - cheapest possible every time :j! We're saving for a house deposit so every penny counts. We only really buy basic food, e.g. rice, tinned toms, veg etc. and cook meals at home, we only buy processed stuff as a treat or if it's reduced to 10p-ish.

This is based on Tesco, so ymmv, but it tends to be white (high refined carbohydrate), little or no dietary fibre, and very high in salt. This sends blood sugar through the roof, isn't filling, and is just generally well worth avoiding from a health point of view.

Has to be Heinz Beans and Ketchup for me - nothing else compares!
    Also
    Tetley teabags

For a long while I was in the must be Tetley camp but I have tried Sainsburys value teabags and they are acceptable enough. Flatmate couldnt tell the difference when I tested them on him and they are also Fairtrade.I still will have some Tetleys in maybe for treats , possibly one a day or something.(I always reuse them all anyway)

I would say yes to the Heinz tho. I havent yet tried value beans etc but have tried other brands before including I think they were plugging Crosse & Blackwell as supposedly the most popular at some point.Have to say always inferior when not Heinz. I don't have them v often tho so maybe thats ok. I only buy those teeny tiny ones anyway which arent that dear.

I also havent tried value jam and marmalades yet. Again I don't use a lot of jam etc so as a treat. You can get some reasonably priced nice jams in Tesco and M&S surprisingly.(M&S is also Fairtrade) I suspect the cheap jams are just like "red" flavoured etc but the marmalades might not be as bad.

Can't do without my Marmite though.

I prefer M&S for fish and meat tho - better quality. I have got the same fish from tesco in the past and it's been full of bones etc. :(
    What Would Bill Buchanan Do?
  • I won't compromise on tea, coffee and ketchup.

Also....as I put in the Tesco value snobbery thread....tampons!!!! Branded all the way!
  • N.B.........if the supermarkets did 'value' condoms do you think they would sell?????????

There's one to think about for the day. Would people be put off as not as 'safe' or would more people buy them as not as expensive as say Durex hence keeping the money saving down by not getting sprogged up???
