I think the price has gone up because of the awful weather and ruined harvest we had last year... Not positive but I've heard certain things about it. Also on Breakfast this morning they were talking about the price of onions going up by about 50% and we're going to have to start importing them!
**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

Yes I noticed this! It used to be cheaper to get bags in Tesco, then Sainsburys but last time I bought pasta it worked out cheaper per weight to buy spaghetti yet it used to be dearer! Big price rise though. Used cheap pasta once and it was ok but DD doesn't like sauce so think it's not quite as nice.0 -
I've noticed that the large 3kg bags have gone up from £1.00 a couple of months ago to £2.55 yesterday.0

It can go a bit sticky.

I always use the basics pasta and find it OK. Once you put a sauce with it I can tell much difference. In fact i tried the tesco basic pasta sauce the other day and it was a bit more watery but once I'd added some hot chilli sauce and some pepperoni it was lovely.
Having trouble finding the pasta in Tescos now though, but did get some in Asda the other day.0 -
I checked sainsburys own brand and basic brand pasta tonight. The strapline on the basic brand is 'still 100% duram wheat' so this might be worth a go. You'd think I'd have noticed the price wouldn't you?0

Sainsbury's basics pasta was 19p for 500g in my local branch a few days ago - I bought a couple of packs but have yet to try it. It was penne shapes - usually get own brand fusilli but couldn't see this in the basics range and am trying to economise.

I work for the company that makes quite a lot of pasta, & rice snacks for Tesco\Sainsburys etc. Not being a fan of either product though I can't help out taste wise. Wouldn't it be strange though if it turned out you were all eating the exact same stuff just put in a different packet!! No, really I don't know, I've never actually thought to ask anyone in the blending dept. The last firm I worked for produced frozen meat products for stores like Lidl & Asda and there, it was just a case of switching over the packaging, same meat, same weight, different price, so wouldn't surprise me if the same were happening elsewhere..:)

I always use Basics/SmartPrice/Value pasta; I really can't tell the difference between that and the ordinary stuff. Not that I'm saying there isn't one, but I can't tell what it is. Give it a shot...if it's not nice, you've lost 18p.#145 Save £12k in 2016 Challenge: £12,062.62/£12,000.00 Beginning Balance: £5,027.78 CHALLENGE MET
