Tenants - how many times have you moved house?

Ignoring unviersity I moved into my first rented place in 2000. I've moved four times since then, each time my decision. The shortest time I've lived somewhere was 7 months. Longest three and a half years. I've been in my current place 13 months and counting. During that time I've had one rent rise of £10 a month, that was after more than three years and just before I moved out. I think you've been quite unlucky, but I've probably been fortunate.0

Been in my AST since summer 2004 and have never actually met my landlord!
We have however chatted on the phone three times when he wanted to get a valuer round so that he could remortgage the property.0 -
Left home 1996 moved into bedsit (1)
Moved 1997 into flat with boyfriend (2)
Moved 1998 into house with boyfriend (3).
Boyfriend moves out 1999. Best mate moves in 2000.
Moved 2000 into different house with best mate (4)
Moved 2003 into flat (5)
Moved 2004 (halfway across country) into different house with best mate (6)
Moved 2005 into current beautiful flat with best mate (7)
So 7 properties in 11 years - not bad really.
Plan to stay here for a good while yet. Landlord lives and works in Dubai and this is his "long term investment/pension" property so hopefully he won't sell up from underneath us!We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

Since finishing uni I lived for 6 months in a shared house and left because I wanted to move in with oh, we lived in first flat for 6 months and left at end of tenancy because the bathroom was disgusting and they wouldn't fix it, moved into another flat that was perfect but left after 9 months because we decided to relocate. Then had a house for a year but decided to leave that because they wanted to increase the rent and it only had 1 bed and i had had our first dd by then so couldn't stay there forever and we moved here, been here for 2 and a half years now with no increase in rent, we are thinking of moving to a cheaper 3 bed flat as we also have ds but this place kind of feels like home so its hard to leave after being here so long. Not sure if i can ever settle down long enough to buy somewhere that sort of commitment to living somewhere scares me.0

Well....
After a year in halls at uni I went on to do 3 years of the standard student move each summer, so that was 3 places in 3 years.
Then moved to a house and was there for 6 months - had to leave after this point as the agent was refusing to manage it any more for the LL cause they didn't have a clue (the poor agent was embarrased to give us the keys when we moved in because the LL had left it a tip - she had been living there with friends but was moving away)
Then moved to a flat for 8 months (and would have stayed longer but I relocated)
After that, rented a house for 10 months, then the owners came back from working abroad and needed it back. As we were shortly to be moving across the country again we moved in with family for a couple of months.
Then we moved into a houseshare for 11 months (paid 2 lots of rent for a month as I was desperate to get out)
Then there was a nice, but small flat for 10 months.
And finally, my lovely, big, sunny, wonderful flat where we have been for the past year and a half, and hope to stay for a lot longer!
So thats 9 places in 9 years!!! I'm just desperately hoping the landlords wont need to sell this place!0 -
Erm... obviously the '3 places in 3 years' at uni....
then....
Lived with a friend of mine in her house (1)
Moved out and into a rented house cause i was pregnant (2)
Moved into a house with sons father (3)
Moved out and into a rented house (4)
Moved into a one bedroom flat with my son (5)
Moved here (6)
Moving again next week (7)
So my darling son, who just gone 8, will have lived in 6 different places!
But hopefully, this next ones gonna be a 'keeper' for quite a while, cause its lovely! You lied to me Edward. There IS a Swansea. And other places.....

3 houses in 5 1/2 years. In the first house for a year then the landlord wanted to raise the rent by over £100 a month - moved out. The second one the landlord would only give a 6 month tenancy and after the 6 months he also wanted to raise the rent by £100 a month. We had done quite a lot of work in that house - putting in a kitchen cos it didn't have one at all and a new bath and toilet cos the old ones were so disgusting I could not use them. Yes we were mad but we cannot just live in a tip. The problem is we have a large dog and so are restricted as so many landlords will not accept them.
Have lived in the house we are in now for 3 years. Again have done quite a bit of work to it but we both like the house and are very happy in the area. The landlord is a pain - he has never done any maintenance, the boiler has never been serviced and cuts out regularly - we had to buy new carpet for the living room which is a very large room and has the stairs in it (so stair and landing carpet too). The carpet when we moved there was covered in the previous owner's dog's wee and stunk. Landlord said he would replace it but after 2 years of living with bare floors we had had enough. Luckily we got a really decent carpet very cheap.
Would hope to stay in this house, even with the pain in the a*** landlord for a couple more years yet. We really want to buy somewhere but with prices they way they are this is not possible at the moment. Since 18:
1. Harrow, London - which was more like Harrowing for almost 2 years, flatmate/friend at time wanted his boyfriend to move in, so we moved across London to have a bigger place - sharing is a necessity for many in London.
2. Docklands, London - About 3 years. LL wanted to put up rent quite a lot, so off we went to ...
3. Greenwich, London - Six months until I moved to York for uni.
4. York - 3 and a half years. Too many problems in this house with the LL who seemed to be under the impression her BTL was going to make her rich without doing any repairs, maintenance etc. We left when the delusional woman decided to increase the rent about 40% which was quite a bit more than newly refurbished houses next to us with modern kitchens, bathrooms, nice furniture etc - unlike ours which looked like it had been furnished from a skip.
5. York - About eight months. Much nicer flat, LL etc.
6. Huddersfield - Nice flat, LL seems a bit clueless though.
Circumstances might necessitate a move back to York. Not sure yet. I won't be in a position to buy for a long time. Meanwhile, I'm fed up with exorbitant agency fees, LL's that seemed to have watched too many property programmes and think it's a get-rich-easy scheme whilst ignoring basic requests for repairs and in two cases, witholding deposits (until we threatened them with the small claims court at which point it mysteriously returned). Yes, sure there are nice ones out there - just speaking about my own experience.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. I rent a place abroad, have been there for 14 months but intend to move soon to another place. This is my choice.
I have 2 properties in Britain, both of which have had tenants for 13 months.
They are good tenants, they can stay as long as they want.:wall:

I seem to spend 2 years in each place - but its always me giving the notice due to change of job location etc, I've never been served notice by a landlord. I've been very lucky with my landlords: always had good ones and I think the reason I move so often is because I get itchy feet....no place is perfect and I'm prepared to compromise when I move in, but after a couple of years the things I've compromised on become more important so I move somewhere else.
But both my Mum and Grandma have a reputation for moving a lot so maybe that's where I get it from? We've been here for about 21 months...maybe I'd better start looking around for somewhere new *lol*0
