After reading your stories I feel very lucky. I've lived in my current council semi for almost 17 years. Would love to buy it but can't afford it.

Hopefully you will all find something more settled soon.

Sadly, although the freedom to move at a drop of a hat can be useful at times and if the washing machine (for instance) breaks down, it's someone else's problem. The advantages are far out-wieghed by the disadvantages. I would love to buy somewhere but on my single salary a mortgage big enough to buy somewhere is out of the question. As an adult with my kids grown up and left home I would be low prioity for council properties. A single parent friend of mine with a 16 year old daughter has been on the housing list for 6 years.

Moved twice in last 3 years. Both cases LL decided to sell the property :(
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

In two years, OH and I have moved twice (prior to that we were in halls as mature students, and prior to that we weren't together lol). First into a flat that we had to leave as the LL wanted to put the rent up too high, and we were sick of the lack of maintenance (funnily enough, we were accidentally called by our old LA who had our number as that of the current tenants, and they're complaining about all of the same things that bothered us :)) We moved again last September and we're due to find out at the end of this month whether our LL will renew the contract.

I rented /house shared for 13 years and probably lived in 10 different places.
  • We've been very lucky. We rented a 2 bedroom flat in 2002 and stayed there hassel free until we chose to move after finding a larger flat, in 2005. Lived in 3 bedroom maisonette from 2005 until now, and we are only leaving next month due to our choice.

I've had 3 moves in the last 5.5 years, first one was a student house, moved out at the end of my degree, into a really nice place where I stayed for a year and a half, until the landlord decided to sell up, and to add insult to injury tried to keep our deposit! Been here for 2 years now, and I'm hoping that the next move will be as a FTB; my current flat is owned by a trust so I'm fairly secure that I won't have to move if I don't want to!

Lived in the same shared house with various others from September '99 to Spring '03 (had to move out for six weeks for renovation at one point).

Moved town in Spring '03 to a rented 1-bed house. Bought in Winter '03-'04, sold up in Spring/Summer '05 to move town again.

Rented a 1-bed place Summer '05 to Autumn '06, since when I have been renting a 2-bed place with a friend - could have stayed where I was but frankly between the unreliable plumbing and the 'visitors' from the takeaway downstairs, I was up for somewhere nicer, and this way it costs me no more.
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

We've moved three times in total. First place was OH's only and he lived there two years, then we moved in together and were in the next place for 5 months (S21 served to expire at end of 6 month tenancy, but we left early with agreement from the landlord) and have been in our current place 4 months so far.
