OK just to clear this issue up - I have just read through the advice on the Food standards Agency website and I dont think you will be entitled to much more that what you have been given. Please see below an extract from the FSA:

You will see 'Best before' dates on foods that last longer, such as frozen, dried or tinned foods. Shops are allowed to sell foods after their 'Best before' date (except eggs) and they will probably still be safe to eat.

But if you buy foods after their 'Best before' date, bear in mind that they might not be as good to eat as they were before. They might have started to lose their flavour or texture. The one food you shouldn't eat after its 'Best before' date is eggs. This is because eggs can contain salmonella bacteria, which could start to multiply after this date.

So the petty comments that most of us have been leaving are probably justified

There is still no need to be sarcastic to the poor chap, in my opinion he was asking a valid question. I thought that "there is no such thing as a stupid question"!!!!!!!!

Too right Tom. You were only asking for advice, on what is meant to be a friendly, helpful forum. If you don't have any advice to offer, or a friendly word to say - don't bother!

You were only asking for advice,

I think you will find that people were commenting on the fact that the OP put
Were they not supposed to offer some sort of compensation as well?

Companies DO NOT HAVE TO OFFER COMPENSATION

Anything they do offer is a gesture of good will

Hold on though, the OP told me to get lost, best had do before they start wanting compensation for me coming back when they didnt want me to;)
