car and insurance after 20 month drink driving ban

My son (24 in march) got his licence back after a 20 month drink driving ban. He did not for various personal reasons manage to complete the rehabilitation course.
He currently has no car.
As a combined xmas/birthday/loan we have said we will buy a cheap old car and insure it.
Any advice on what type of car would be best and insurance companies to use would be much appreciated.

Regardless of the car, the insurance is going to cost you a fortune.
I doubt any of the mainstream insurers will touch him (try the screenscraping websites and see how many companies come back with 'unable to quote'). I think your best bet is to go to a broker and let them try - they may have to speak to underwriters etc - but be prepared for a big bill.
(Just googled 'drink drive insurance' and it seems there are several specialist companies.)0 -
Obviously the insurance is going to be the killer here, try to find a car in insurance group 1, this will lower the costs considerably. A young driver with a DD conviction is going to pay a fortune, especially as he had a 20 month ban, rather than the 12 month usual.
Good luck finding something for him.
I'm sure there wil be some people posting later saying he does not deserve to drive, they should not of given him his licence back, ect.
Please ignore them, these people are not like us, they are perfect and have never made a single mistake in their lives.

Thanks - I'd posted in another thread too as what sure where to post. On tha I've already had that people like him should be banned for life.
The irony is it is not something he did regularly. He hadn't drunk that much but had eaten very little for a few days - his partner who was pregnant had just announced that their relationship was over. when caught he was not pulled over because of his driving but got caught in a road block linked to a major crime.0 -

I don't think it matters TBH. He obviously shouldn't have been behind the wheel even if it was the one and only time he'd ever been drunk in his life. And I'm guessing he was very over the limit to get a longer ban than normal.
But it's done now. Only you know if he's learned his lesson.0 -
He barely drinks at all these days0

Well, just hope he doesn't when he's going to need to drive. There really isn't any excuse.
I rarely drink and I won't drink anything at all if there's any possibility that I'll need to drive.0 -

And how is that any more constructive than what has been posted on the OP's other thread????

Hi there,
I was caught about 10 years ago now and can remember the joy of trying to find an insurance company that would take me on after completing my 12 month ban.
Prices were very high with those that would touch me, rightly so, and I actually found the cheapest one to go to was my previous insurer. I called them and explained my position and they gave me insurance at a slightly better price due to my previous good record.
The only advice I can give is to call around as many as possible, prices vary substantially, and to try your previous insurer if he has a good previous record as they may offer something better. The screen scrapers are almost next to useless as many companies will automatically dump you if you state you have a DR10 etc, although they may quote over the phone.
As previously stated ignore the 'holier than thou' brigade, people would be very suprised to realise just how many are well over the limit the morning after and assume that as they have been in bed they are now fine. It is quite scary when you talk to officers about the people they stop and catch, makes you aware just how unaware people are about when they are fit to drive.
Good luck

thanks for this - will try his previous insurer as soon as we have the car. He'd had a moped from 16 and passed driving test at 17 and had several years of a clean licence.
you're right about the night before - that was his problem night before plus a couple of pints at lunchtime, no food and a very slight body frame.0 -
could a moderator please remove this thread for me please. I have found the personal insults / comments/ holier than thou attitude on the thread I posted in the insurance forum so upsetting that I feel that the hurt they are causing is unhelpful.
I cannot believe that my son is the only person in this situation and who has made one mistake yet many of the posts are so judgemental.
Whatever you (or I) do or don't think about what happened he needs to be able to move on with his life and I was simply asking for help.
Is there anything i can do to remove the thread?0
