There's no point having two standards - shops don't want to have to sell two copies of every film. If that was the case then they'd still be selling music on tape and records.

And for how many years were they happy to sell tapes and records at the same time? 2 diiferent formats.

The way I see it, as long as the Xbox 360 has the HD-DVD add on, it's a bit premature to forecast its demise.

    Cheers

Why are people saying that this player will be redundant in 2 months time? That is like saying all DVD players out there will be redundant in 2 months which is absolute nonsense!

Its not really at all like saying that, as all the movie studios will be releasing films on dvd, this is not the case for HD-DVD.

Err.. yes it is like saying that... because the HD-dvd player in the original post WILL PLAY REGULAR DVD's and even better it will upscale them so the point that movie studios will be releasing films on DVD is that this player will be useful in that form if nothing else until the format wars settle down!!!

All I need is a Hi def TV, and the gas bill paid.

Anyone willing to swap for 2 Betamax recorders, 3 boxes of tapes, 1 slide rule and 1 AtariXL?
Might be able to do you a deal on the gas bill, but I have a couple of questions on the Betamax recorders..... Are they HD ready, and if so will you be including a couple of HDMI cables to go with them???? :D
Also is the slide rule metric or imperial??? I believe this can be quite important???!!!
Oh, and one more question..... what's an Atari XL??? Is that like an Atari, but really really big???? :j

  • I suspect the Blue ray will win buthey that could be media hype, the point is an upscaling DVD player will cost at least this so you get the ability to watch Hd-DVDs, 7 hd-dvds to watch straight away (albeit not great ones) and you can buy some more when they all go in the bargain bin if blue ray really does win!!

I've got a collection of about 50 DVD's that I'd love to see upscaled if I had a spare £120.00

False analogy: the difference between tapes and records is large (introduction date, size, sound quality, robustness, etc); the difference between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, to your average consumer, is nothing.

Your TV upscales anyway. What makes you think playing them through this device will make them look any better?

If the studios were worried about cost then there wouldnt be any going down the Blu Ray route. It costs more in pretty much every way.
...as well it might, but to suggest it will cost nearly as much as making two versions of everything is laughable.

If you input a normal signal from a standard DVD players you will notice tearing and general nastiness on the image quality in comparison to this toshiba HD DVD player. Please read a review on the product before making these rash statements.

How do I know this, I bought the player and have noticed a massive difference on playing DVDs on a HD ready LCD. As for HD DVDs the colours and detail are just immense - really show off my new tv nicely ;)

PS. Any reason for spamming (posting 3 times straight after each other as opposed to just posting once?)

It is exactly like saying that. If you think that this player will be redundant in 2 months time, you are ignoring the following facts

Fact 1: There are hundreds of HD-DVD's available
Fact 2: This player is a DVD player therefore there are tens of thousands of DVD's available
Fact 3: This player will upscale those DVD's to a higher definition than DVD's

These facts mean it is an absolute nonsense to state that this player will be redundant in 2 months time!
