Anyway....
Having read some discussion on the same subject on the net, I have seen some very important issues....
Given that most people will likely hold off from purchasing HD/BR for the forseeable future (x number of years), is it sensible to suggest that "on demand" and downloadable films will mean that HD/BR will fizzle out long before they become as popular as DVD....
I suppose what i'm trying to say is will we buy films in the future, or will we just download them as and when we want to watch them..... can buying films go the same way as buying music (mp3 revoloution?!?)

This is indeed a very valid point, BUT the major problem with this is that the U.K has one of the worst telecommunication and internet infrastructures in Europe, I have a pretty good connection, yet it would take me neigh on 48 hours to download a film, my friend has a poor line, and it would take them neigh on a fortnight to download a film. So maybe the question should be "What happens first, a high definition winner or B.T upgrading there network?" :rotfl:Win £2008 in 2008 member 236Januarys Wins £322 & signed Rugby ballFebuary Wins: £400 -
I speak as someone who bought not one, but two Betamax recorders.(for 2 properties)
However even after you couldn't buy pre-recorded tapes, they still recorded missed TV programmes; which was the primary reason for buying them.
At College I spent a fortune on a slide rule, gambling that calculators would be too big, and too expensive, and never be used by serious engineers; I still use it instead of a 12 inch rule.
So after much deliberation, and determined to get it right this time, I bought the Toshiba EP35! - mainly because(as someone mentioned earlier) I can get superb audio via my older Sony home theatre equipment.
The picture on my brand new full HD Panasonic is simply amazing - upscaling almost as good.
The most important point for me is I get this level of performance NOW.
Of course in time it is possible that I will have bought another 'Betamax' and my kids will nag me to get BR - so I get one!
What I do find slightly irritating on this thread is the self-congratulatory stance from some posters in that they have been clever enough to buy what they perceive as the winning format. That coupled with an element of Schadenfreude makes unpleasant reading.
To quote the 'Geordie Messiah' I would Luv it, Luv it, if HD DVD wins the war; but I ain't confident!0 -
nonsense.......ps3 blows this out of the water.
ps3 is being CONSTANTLY updated via firmware updates with everything from 24fps to the very latest HDMI standards and loads more.
the format war is over.......BLURAY won.
dont waste your money on a player that will no longer 'be' in the next 6 months.
I should keep quiet until the PS3 has true HD audio with true 7.1 surround sound supportNot everything that's cheap is a bargain0 -

Pity that PS3 is 3 times the cost of the Tosh EP-30 and unless you are a kiddie wanting to play games then it seems such a waste of cash.
As for the "the player will no longer be in 6 months" quote.........will my player self destruct a la Mission Impossible? No. Will it just cease to work if BR is declared the winner? No. Will it refuse to play my existing collection of SD discs? No. Will I have hundreds of DVD's available to buy or rent in the months and years to come? Yes.
So I will continue to enjoy the outstanding upscaling qualities of this player for years to come then? Yes!
I expect I will get my moneys worth from this purchase then:beer:0 -

And when Toshiba & The Chinese bring out HD-DVD recorders you can play back those HD recordings in the bedroom or wherever you want on your HD DVD player. NO! .... HD DVD is far from finished. I think the Studio movies is a small splash in the ocean for what HD DVD will do.Nice to save.0 -
Guys a very interesting debate, I have gone with the Yea's and ordered one today from Amazon as Play are sold out. I take what the blue rays have to say in to account and indeed I have a PS3 but £120 Quid with seven films still Gotta be worth it! especialy if it plays normal DVD at better quality as well?
Anyone know which free films you can pick from as my Word is up the spout and I cant read the list ...with thanksNew Comper in 2008 wins zero  ho hum.....

I am not really up on all this stuff so this thread has made an interesting read.
My thoughts are, if you care enough about the latest gadget be it HD, Blu ray, PS3 etc then paying out for an offer like OP posted is not really going to be a waste if you get a couple of years out of the player anyway. No doubt you'll all be rushing out to buy a PS4 or whatever is the latest thing by then anyway so what difference does it make. Is it worth debating over.
The Betamax on ebay was up at £22. If I could buy a DVD player for £120 with free DVD's and sell it for £22 in about £20 years I would be quite happy. :rotfl:0
